I can hear what I believe to be my fuel pump humming loudy. Especially on longer trips. Are it's days numbered? Should I be shopping for a new one. Many Thanks. Dave
They can go on for quite a while, but you would not want it to fail far from home. It would do no harm to replace it and keep the old one as an emergency spare.
My pump makes a humming noise too, I have changed the fule filter and the humming stopped for a few days but its back now but much quieter than before.
unless you have problems with the cars behaviour then i would go along the lines of "if it aint broke dont touch it"..

Before changing fuel pumps, it's worth checking the correctness of the bracket tightness around the fuel pump. The metal bracket should infact have a black plastic buffer ring underneath - otherwise the humming of the pump is amplified excessively, since metal ring bracket is in direct contact with metal body of fuel pump.
Sometimes the bolt clamp is just done up too tightly - loosen slightly if it's overdone and see if that stops the excessive humming. Happened once to me, I overtightened the clamp and noise was far louder than before. Loosening a few turns did the trick !
Otherwise you may have some dirt in the fuel pump - remove fuel pump from system and connect up 12V and earth to the pump...but on the opposite points. So connect 12V to the -ve point on the pump and ground wire to +ve side of pump. This will run pump in reverse so it chucks out all rubbish inside. Only do this for about 5-10 seconds.
