I have a fuel delivery problem on my 1983 280TE (123.093) and need to find the fuel pump relay in order to test both this and the fuel pump. Can anyone let me know exactly where it will be and what it looks like?

Also (and the answer may be the same) can anyone identify the large black 9-pin relay I located in the passenger footwell just forward of the door pillar? This has a green wire coming off pin 1 that is disconnected and I can't find where it should go!

Not sure if an '83 230 is different to an '89 300 but.......

The fuel pump relay is **NOT** (Thanks Richard, must be sun stroke!) an aluminium cased relay (it is black as Richard suggests) located behind the battery and ECU.

Looking at the battery towards the rear of the car it is the right hand relay, behind the fuel injection ECU.

The OVP relay IS aluminium cased with a red top and a fuse mounted on the end of the ecu!!
As for the black relay you have found I haven't a clue!

On my car, the aluminium relay behind the battery is the OVP relay, it has a fuse (or two) on top.

The fuel pump relay is a monster, it is black, rectangular, and has loads of pins. I believe it is the rev limiter as well as just a regular relay.

Look for the words 6 Zyl or 4 Zyl on the top in white characters, and you will have found it.

Regards,

Richard

Fuel pump relay

I have a 123 280 Coupe that had a fuel problem. The large black relay that you describe is as far as I know the right relay. the first two pins nearest to the door should be marked (on the relay) as #30 and #87. If you bridge the two sockets that correspond to the pins on the relay you should hear the pump kick in. If it does, you either have a duff relay or no signal to the relay. Don't leave the bridging wire in the connector as the pump will stay on all the time regardless of wether the ignition is on or not. hope this helps.

Thanks for the comments

I'll investigate the black relay tomorrow although the 'wire to nowhere' still worries me!

HERO!

Thanks Nutsonmercs that was exactly the job. Pins 85 & 30 connected, whirring sound from the back, turn of the key and she springs into life (very well in fact considering the battery is almost flat!).

All I've got to do now is find out how much a new one costs! At least it wasn't the pump, which I'd imagine would be much more (as well as a pain to replace logistically).

I've also found the other end of the green wire, hidden up inside the sleeving of the loom. I'll repair this and try and work out what's now working that wasn't!

Thanks again! :D
