Fuel Tank Sender Unit ????

My ML 270 Cdi W163 Auto 2000/2001 fuel gauge has started to play up.
I filled the tank and the gauge only showed just over 3/4 and seemed to drop quickly.
I filled it up again in case I did not "neck it" the first time but this time it showed under 3/4 when full to the neck.
How easy is it to change the sender unit as am led to believe that you have to change the pump also as they are one unit.
Seems daft to me but what the heck do I know.

Any help much appreciated.
