Further Rattles

HI, 1st time here, hope I've got it right.
I have an E300 T/D 1998 (S) I have just replaced drive belt tensioner bar which I thought would stop my own rattle.....did not although belt tensioner better. Now I have a rattle, sounds like an exhaust vibration which is coming from under the bonnet passenger side??? No exhaust that side but it is doing my head in trying to locate it. Only there on tickover!!!

Also very tappety when cold. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Try to define it between a rattle and a very small squeek. Only on tickover at first sounds like a turbo main bearing. There are obvious sources of a rattle like valve clearances etc. but presuming they are checked, it might be something turbo ish or the exhaust manifold-to-head gaskets. A small exhaust leak here will sound like a tick or a light knock rather than the 'Hole in my exhaust noise' you would expect. Our BMW does that exhaust thing and until it's warm, it sounds like someone hitting an empty glass jar with a biro pen. Warm it up and the noise goes so i know i need knew gaskets at some point. There are chances you problem could be along those lines so i hope it's something small and not a major headache for you.

An alternator under load often causes this type of noise. Will normally disappear the moment the engine speed is increased.

Could it be timing chain rattle, there is less on the passengers side to mask it.
A home made stethoscope may help you to find it. I use a large wooden handled screwdriver with the blade on the test object and the handle to my ear.
