They have been done but it turns out that doing them hasn't solved the problem.

Hence £420 later faint/dull clonking I hear when I turn right and pull away is still there. How much should this job (i.e. changing wishbones) cost anyway?

How much does changing drag links cost? I think it might be something to do with the drag links. Sorry I have had a bad day and I just need to moan to people how are faceless to me......Well until the summer GTG.

Drag links under £10 each and so easy to fit.

Bruno i am very interested to hear you mention a dull clonking in the manner you describe cos i have had similar with one of our 124's (95 300d 60k) the car is rock solid and in as new condition mainly cos i'm obsessed with maintenance. I have had similar clunking occasionally for the past 3 years, nothing can be found. The noise dissappears for months after a waxoyling session but returns when the car dries out fully in the summer, anoying or what? Hope you find the problem Brian

The simple way to diagnose this problem is (process of elimation) and does not cost you anything except a little time and effort. Simply remove the drag links and the torsion bar and drive the car (only a short distance I should add). This will not damage your suspension. If the clonk has gone then you know the one of the drag links is at fault. The other way is to remove one drag link at a time and drive the car.;)

Using a iron bar or something similar, just lift the roll bar, to see if there is any play in the ball joints, you could unbolt one end of the link and check for any play in the ball joints, to do this when you jack the car, put something like an axle stand under the wish bone and lower the car to take the loading off the ball joints ans roll bar.

The ball joints are brand new with the wishbone there shouldn't be any play in them should there? Plus, I think I hear it over my shoulder to my right....:?

I really don't want to own a money pit.......:(

Guys

You haven't got the jist of this.

Bruno has just replaced ALL his wishbone bushes and the wishbone ball joint on each side.

He says there is still a clunk from the suspension (ok in a later post he mentions over his shoulder)

There are NO other joints in the front suspension of a w124 ce of 1989 vintage.

Eric - there is a steering drag link at a cost of some £35 - but no other drag links.

Bruno

Who originally diagnosed your clunking, and confirmed to you that the work you have just had done would solve the problem ?????????

You need to go back and say it has not worked and get them to fix it within the price you have already paid.

IF you diagnosed it yourself - well that is a different problem - and I have a tip for you.

A good way to get a cheap diagnosis of a car problem is to take your car to a place that does MOTs and ask for a pre MOT checkover.

For £40/50 it is the best value you will get for a comprehesive check up.

I dont want to complicate this issue, but you have already spent money for no fix, on the good side maybe some of these parts did need changing. Now you said you hear the noise over your right shoulder and your car is right hand drive. If as malcolm says its the centre prop bearing, then you would hear this noise over next to you on your left just rear of the centre console. Also you say this only happens when turning right, and accellerating, out of your drive. If it were the centre bearing on the prop, you would get the same clonk whether going left/right or straight when accellerating. Therefore im thinking the clonk is coming from the rear right drive or suspension. Does this sound logical? It is right hand drive yes?

It is right hand drive and it does sound like I hear the sound over my right shoulder.

however driving it today whilst resting my hand on that central raised whatever (i don't know what to call it) behind the holding thing under the armrest, I felt knocking exactly in time with the sound.

I would like further advice on how to proceed cos I am at a place where I would just come out and ask the indie to check it out but I am not convinced it is the smartest thing.
