g wagen speedo

can anyone with an intimate knowledge of a g wagen gearbox shed some light on why my speedo only works when 4wd is selected in the range box? 1985 300gd 5cly.

Sorry about the delay in replying, Just joined the happy throng of the merc owners association,
Your speedo prob is not to tricky, the speedo drive comes off the front propshaft, so if it only works in 4x4, the front axle must have a fault. Usualy the C.V. joints but sometimes the diferential unit itself.
