Apart from the post office and parcel delivery company feeding him on a daily basis he gets a combination of dried food with a couple of spoons of cooked mince, or chicken, or whatever we have left. He only gets fed once a day. His favourite is licking out the yoghurt pots..............or the tinfoil containers that you get from M&S that go in the oven

He hates swimming but loves paddling up to his stomach

The snow is his favourite time of the year, he thrives in the cold weather
DSC00318.jpg

but he also likes to sunbathe

This was him at 2 years old

and at just over a year old here

Lovely - he was huge at just 1 year old. My dog loves lying outside-especially in the snow. Unfortunately we cannot let her lay outside at the moment as she is not well - seems to be having trouble with her back legs. I think it is arthritis .We have a special ramp that we have to sue to get her in and out of the car. So heartbreaking:(

She is 10 - but a few years ago she had 2 big operations - has metal plates in back legs-so i imagine this would make her arthritis worse.

Ding, clatter....I just heard the gate rattle as the fox escapes to the growling sound of being chased by 8 stone of muscle

The Akita is described as being aloof, but don't let them fool you, they watch everything that's going on around them, you think they don't care then like a bolt of lightning they have caught their prey

Has he actually ever caught a fox - also do you get badgers in your back garden. We have a lot down here -gladly none in my garden - but my sister gets a lot in her garden- she has to bring the dog in-she has a jack russell-otherwise the badgers would probably tear it to bits

He's caught a few foxes, it helps keep the population down, I think it's called survival of the fittest. No badgers here they're vicious blighters. Just seen him in the camera, he's on the prowl, there must be another fox around

My Father in law nearly lost his arm to one of those Akita dogs. He was working on a farm where they kept one and it had managed to get off its chain.
He was in hospital for a week and still cant raise his arm above his shoulder, 5 years later.

They're powerful dogs, sadly not everyone who owns them has the right attitude to keeping such a dog. They get a bad press because the chavs keep them as the latest 'in accessory' and haven't a clue how to control them.

No breed of dog can be singled out for being an agressive breed, all dogs can be agressive and all dogs should be respected for what they are, which is dogs not humans, not babies and not 'your children'. They have to learn boundaries and know who is alpha and with a few basic rules in place you should hopefully have a well balanced dog who will be loyal and serve you well to the end.

The Akita was originally bred for hunting bears (they are completely fearless, nothing and I mean nothing scares them) and for watching over the young children whilst the mothers worked in the rice fields.

Totally agree with you. Perhaps it's time to vet people before they are aloud to own a dog. Whatever happened to the dog licence-I know it was minimal - but perhaps it should be brought back and be a decent amount - maybe this would stop people going out and buying dogs willy nilly -especially if they can't afford to keep them. Breaks your heart when you watch these animal rescue programmes - half wit brainless people keeping dogs in dreadful conditions and never take them to vet. So sad to see such suffering.

That's just the problem Lizzy, any half wit can own a dog and with no previous knowledge. The rules are too lax and from what I've heard things are about to tighten up, but will it be enough....I doubt it

well if they bring this £500 insurance thing in, im afraid i think my dog will have to go. i can barely afford the car insurance on what i earn, on top of the household bills and mortgage, and this i feel would push me over the top. i earn less than my outgoings are, as it is

don't know the answer to that Pete - I only know that i would walk around with rags on my feet if i had to to keep my dog. I suppose you can get help from the people's dispensary for sick animals when it comes to vet bills- I would sell my furniture to pay for the insurance-and Brian's clothes:rolleyes:

to be honest, i think id skip on the insurance anyhow. he rarely strays beyond the back garden (closed in) without a lead attached. front door to the car with no lead is his limit (10 yards max and always in my presence and more or less by my side!)

6 or thereabouts. he was a rescue dog i got 2 years ago. i keep him on the lead as while he's fine with people, he wont do a thing he's told when other dogs are about, so i let him run in the garden between walks etc. theres too many kids around the area would tease him into accidentally catching hold of them, even gently, that the parents (being scroungers on the dole, full of drugs) would sue, so i tend not to risk it.

did you say in another thread Pete that he is a collie?- they are very intelligent dogs - but - I do believe they are not very good with children. When Brian was young his dad had a working collie -super dog but it would attack Brian and he was terrified of it. The dog was very clever it only went for Brian when his father was not about to see it. Brian told his father and eventually he caught the dog going for Brian. His father repremanded the dog - hit it actually-not that I agree with hitting a dog but it did learn.
