Today after ordering the parts for the new roof I need for my garage, I decided to do the prep work for the slight change in style and fitment.

The current roof has those corrugated combination material slats/boards or whatever they're called.

A couple of weeks ago some local children decided to climb on the roof and being of the slightly larger variety succeeded in breaking or cracking almost all of them. My roof went from waterproof to sieve overnight. I literally have one board which is undamaged.:mad: The parents of the little bar stewards were not interested in the slightest in contributing to the costs involved, I now wish that the little gits had actually fallen throught he roof, it might have taught the little blighters a lesson.

Is it legal to cover the roof in broken glass or barbed wire?

Anyway, hopefully on Thursday or Friday next week, I will get a call telling me the material will be delivered that day.

I've decided to use 11mm thick OSB3 board as my base to give the new roof some added strength and then cover it with some 6ft x 30" Vistalux polycarbonate to make it waterproof. I will do the job myself as it'll keep me occupied during my furlough leave.

Previously, I had taken advantage of the corrugations to wind the wiring for the lights around the joists so that it was held in place securely. As a result of the new way I am doing the roof I had to remove it all and then attach it to the joists with those little hammer in clips that grip the wire.

After doing all that, I swept up and tidied everything to maximise my floor space. I had a couch in the garage that I had been saving for my nephew just prior to when the Corona Virus struck and rather screwed up all our plans, fortunately my very nice neighbour let me store it in his garage, so No 1, son and I lifted it in out of the way. It'll be a big help. and will keep it dry in the mean time.

I could actually get a car in my garage again. :D

I'm quite looking forward to the material arriving so that I can get tore in tbh, I just hope that the weather doesn't turn or it'll make it a miserable experience as it has to be done rain or shine.

Fingers crossed!

Paint it (or at least the edges) with anti-climb paint
Make sure you have a sign somewhere stating you have anti-climb paint. Wouldn’t wish for the little darlings to get greasy paint all over their designer clothes

A large part of me, the vindictive part,:mad: still wants to cover the roof in broken glass though Russ.

Do you think I could get away with it? ;)

You can do that , but risk being sued by “said Herbert “ getting injured . However with the correct signage maybe some visible barbed wire or spike strips and anti climb paint would at least create excuses for you , especially if your motivation is stopping people falling through your thin roof and hurting themselves

Put a cattle fence around perimeter edge, and a sign both ends with a picture guide, never know a cow might get up there!

No you couldn’t unfortunately, as a home owner and tax payer you’re an easy target. They know all their rights and none of their responsibilities. Just go for the paint and signage.

After the new roof has been fitted I should be able to dance on the wooden part of it without going through, and sadly I ain't no light weight, Wighty. The thin part, the polycarbonate that is, is only to be fitted for waterproofing.

How about a PIR aimed at the roof with a 120db piercing siren. Set it so it only detects movement on the roof and leave it permanently armed.

I think I would just put a dummy CCTV camera on the hose pointed at the garage. :)

Knowing the kids where I used to live they'd climb up and dance in front of the camera knowing there was sod all you could do about it.

I fitted a marine siren inside a house for the alarm... you really couldn’t stay in the house when that went off.

When it spooled up you had seconds to get out before it made your eardrums meet in the middle :D:p

There was never another (successful) break-in after that was installed

When I worked at Hartwell Motor Contracts our compound was plagued by Crackheads coming over the fence and breaking into cars, pinching spare wheels and anything else they could get their grubby little hands on. The local Police paid special attention to the site and we put a metal stake fence round it, the ones with the spiked fork tips to the at the top of the stakes. Nothing seemed to stop these vermin. We then put dummy CCTV cameras around the building at gutter height and the intrusions stopped over night. Job done :)

That's amazing.. is that your French residence?
One of the 6 barns.... (and one of 3 usable for vehicles).
The intention is (money permitting) to install a 4 post lift where the 129 is.
Need to concrete the floor first which is a fairly major expense.

Now that’s a garage!

Makes mine look like a joke but hey, I can live with my joke box.
Conors’ post made me appreciate what I have, although it would be nice to have a garage the size of yours Alistair, I could get all our cars in then.

Yea man you are lucky to have that... just look at my other thread with my front bumper and other bits strewn across the grass in my housing estate. Good job the place is generally not the refined and the residents don't seem to care, or the council would be on me.

Pic attached of my garage/workshop lmao.. Having to clear everything each day makes things take that little bit longer.

Been there mate and glad that I only need to set up the leccy and water hose for my pressure washer outside now. The garage has been a blessing on more than a few occasions during the winter. :D :D
