Gave a work colleague a lift today. As we approached my 10yr old car he said " ooh a merc, very nice" followed by, as he took his seat, "and an elegance model too, and you are working for xxxxxx, hmmmmm!"
he now thinks I am living beyond my means....fantastic!!! If ever I had any doubt that even a 10yr old merc can inspire a certain respect in fellow car lovers then it is now finally dispelled!!!! He then spent the entire journey talking about his twin turbo v6 granada with nox...means nothing to me ;-)

I know what you mean. I had a brand new Volvo estate, a very nice car and looked great. I've now got an 06/06 C220CDi estate that cost about £8k less and everybody thinks I've traded up (which I accept I have in some people's viewpoint on here). The Merc' certainly feels more 'special' and definately has more presence.

A few years ago, I was employed by a High Street bank. The senior staff had an assortment of Mondeo's, BMW 3-series, etc. One day, I arrived in my pristine (newly acquired) Jaguar XJR - which cost me all of £5K..!! As a 'lowly paid' and subsequently 'low status' employee, my arrival caused a few raised eyebrows. The car/model private plate helped

Unbeknowns to me, I was immediately investigated for 'financial irregularities' This of course, was a total nonsense - I didn't even have an account with the bank I worked for.!!!! (for those who know what I mean, there is a major significance in that).

As time went by, my colleagues could never work out how I could afford my 'high lifestyle'.

When I left (after 6 years and 2 Jaguar car-changes) they still hadn't worked it out. I left them non-the wiser.!!!!!

Its great isn't it. After all these years of being affordable most people still think mercs are mega bucks. I have a few friends that just automatically assumed a merc was beyond them, until I pointed out that they make more that I do and I'm on my 3rd. They run Mercs now and won't buy anything else.
I was discussing it with the mrs yesterday. She says thats why she likes me running them. you turn up anywhere in it and people treat you differently. The people behind, in the brand new mondeo, worth considerably more, get less respect.
Its the same on the road. I've always said that you get less hassle and more respect on the road in a merc. Lots of people tell me, yeah right, it's all in your head. But a mate who recently bought an E said the same to me. He gets held up a lot less in the merc than he did in his previous, faster, VW. People just move out of the way. I took the Landrover down the motorway yesterday and I felt a bit vunerable. It's nearly as big as the merc, has plenty of go, but people didn't leave me alone as much as they do in the merc and I found people rushing to beat me to a gap. Just doesn't happen in the E.

I wouldn't drive anything else. Not if I can help it.

Defining moment for me was having a car park attendent call me Sir and being helpful. I'd never had that before.

People definitely assume that you're loaded, even if you're not. Mine is worth less than my wife's Micra and yet I get more comments about having too much money (I wish) than she does.

:D:D:D Yea its great...but don't tell all your friends ;) lets keep it our little secret  My wife didn't want a Merc to start with, but now she's a convert and I wonder why

I should add, that she won't even take a lift with friends now, they all take a lift in the Merc, people, not hard to spoil, Eh?

Cheers

Another young 'un. Excellent.

I got told today by a mate who I gave a lift (2005 E200Cdi) that I had too much money. I was never told this when I had the V8 X5 (which cost £5k more).

I tried to keep the E class secret @ work, but it came out so haggling a pay rise will be fun

But its a Merc, genuine class buys respect.

It's great isn't it - you don't get that with other cars. People really do think you must be successful, well off, etc etc. I even experienced similar with my old A-class.

I've got a cherished plate on mine which hides the age and just helps add even more mystique to how well off I must be!! he he. I love it, a real ego boost.

I remember when I first got my C-Class and took it to my old place of work, all the smokers outside by the door were chatting thinking one of the bosses (who all drove stereotype BMW's) had a new car when in reality it was just one of the workers!!!

The only thing is I feel the need to hide it away in the garage if anyone comes to the house to quote on building work, decorating etc...... just in case they think I can afford to pay more. he he.

Nice move Micman.

I just had some work done on my bathroom by a mate who is a plumber. He knows me and did me a good deal. But when it came to getting a price on plastering the walls and ceiling the first thing the guy said to me was 'Nice Car!" followed by a cheeky smile and a very cheeky price!

I did try and plead poverty but to no avail.

Lesson learnt - get the car off the drive when tradesmen are approaching!

As I say I normally hide the car away but funnily enough I did have a tree surgeon round recently and my car was on the drive that day. He too said 'nice car' and told me he had always owned Mercs and was just waiting delivery of the brand new model C-class (for his family car). We ended up having a long chat about owning Mercs, he gave me a price for the work, he undercut my cheapest quote and I gave him the job - no problems.
