Hey all, I just thought id share something with you. There was one thread on here a while ago that said something along the lines of, you dont need to change the filters or oil in ur auto trans and that dirty oil and filters wont cause slipping of gears.....

I decided to prove this wrong :D i did a service on the weekend on my auto. It resulted in smoother changes and more power....it also stopped the slipping gears...suprise suprse :p

One thing i have noticed tho is it get a clunk wen putting into reverse sometimes...although not loud it occurs in cold weather/ wet wether only....sounds like a flex disk??

Hi

I think your talking about the 5 speed 722.6 box that doesn't require oil or filter change this is an electronic control box.

You will have 722.4 box which is 4 speed vacum control and should have oil and filter change every 36000 miles also worth checking modulating pressure and control pressure as these are adjustable on this box

Do I read this correctly,
I had suspected that there was a vacuum control of the pressure as well as the throttle cable. But saw no mention in the manual.

If so, is there a "vacuum Capsule" or similar diaphragm type unit which can be used to adjust the fluid pressure.
My 4-speed is clunky on the up-changes, and feels like it's running with too much pressure. I havn't really messed with the cable setting as much as I should have, so it may be that. But vacuum is a much better indicator of loading than throttle position in my book.

Hi Richard

It can have the adverse affect if you mess with something you don't really understand. The modulating pressure controls the quality of changes in all gears. Not just up shifts. So if the down shifts are ok. Then I would suggest that this is not the problem. In saying that. It is one of the few adjustments which can be carried out, out side the box. It should be carried out with a pressure guage. In my experience it no usually that far out. With the millage your vehicle has covered. I would think that the clutch pack & brake band clearences are out & require adjustment. To carry out this tho. Means a box strip.

Me thinks its not so bad after all.

Andy,
I think I'll just put up with the harsh changes.
By the way, it was fine on the up-changes until I changed the fluid and filter.......mmmmm me thinks a connection!
Used genuine parts and Comma Dextron II, which seemed fine in all my other autos

I had posted a question some time ago about a humming noise which seems to be coming from the gearbox ( related to final drive speed). It's now intermittent, but maybe I'm looking at a box rebuild in the near future.
Anyone got experience of rebuilding these boxes? I've rebuilt ZF and Renault autos before but never a MB box.
