Hi Guys

I have recently bought a 1999 E55. There is a cap on top of the gear box oil tube, which says it is for mechanics only.

This cap is cracked, and has a hole drilled in it.

Why would this have been done? Could it be to insert some kind of diagnostic tool, maybe to check the fluid level (outside of Mercedes)?

The gear box itself is super-smooth with no bumps or lags, so I'm not too concerned - but I'd like to put my mind at rest.

Any ideas?

Many thanks!!

That would make it a 210 E55AMG. The cap on the box is a seal, as the box was once sealed for life. This policy is no more and the fluid and filter should be replaced at 60k miles, maybe the seal has been broken to check/change the fluid. the last thing that you need is a hole in it, and it should be replaced with a new one.

E55

Not sure what a '210' is, but it's an E55 AMG 1999 with automatic box (not tiptronic).

What's a 210? And does it usually have a hole??

Many thanks!

If you mean the gearbox dipstick tube, right at the back of the engine, then it should have a cap + an anti tamper clip on it. Get one tomorrow (while you're topping up your PAS) - you don't want ANY dirt/water etc going down this tube. It is vital the gearbox oil is kept clean.

Cap

Ah that's ok. I thought that it may have been tampered with and that it could be a problem.

The service is coming soon so I'll request they replace the cap.

Many thanks!!

Malcolm, more than one answer is better and gives the guy with the problem more confidence as to what is wrong + your answers are always right.

Personally, I would wait for the service. Not for the sake of a couple of quid compared to a new box, torque converter, labour etc. I know it's unlikly but it's just not worth the risk.

The cap for the ATF fluid dipstick hole is pennies, I wonder why someone has been there without fitting a new one?
