New member hoping for some help with a recent purchase of a B220 auto deisel 2013. Really hoping its not the whole transmission. I've noticed since owning that 2nd gear was changing to 3rd a bit late. But now there is serious over-revving in 1st and 2nd gear to around 2.6 or 2.7k revs. Engine light has also come on. I don't have an OBD II reader but will order one asap. I've read it could be transmission fluid or 13 pin thingimajig. Love the car and am very dissapointed to have an issue already. It was obviously 2nd hand but in pristine condition with 81k on the clock. Any help, ideas or suggestions would be appreciated sooooo much...preferably before I have to research and risk the assessment of a untrustworthy garage. Any suggestions of competent ones would also be appreciated in North or East London ideally.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Gearbox oil, atf would be my first check. Should be changed every 40k or so and, or five yearly.
Hopefully that is all it is.

Really appreciate such a quick response. Hoping that it is just the transmission oil has certianly calmed my nerves. Do you think it is safe to drive as I am at the inlaws 50 mins from home - and my usual mechanic is there. Or I shouldn't drive it at all until resolved?

Get yourself a reputable mercindy garage who knows the brand. where are you based. some one may have a recommendation
If this is a recent purchase, contact the seller, was it private purchase or trader.

Thanks it was private from Wales. If I contact them, even if they had an inkling, wouldn't they just feign ignorance? Plus it was Wales, so I drove 3.5 hrs back and have driven it for 3 or so weeks without issue.

Do you know approx how much the oil change normally costs with a Merc garage?

Thanks Matt!

It sounds like its in limp mode, potentially due to an engine/emissions fault. When the engine is limp mode, the gearbox does odd things, late changes, clunky changes etc.

My thoughts are if you diagnose the fault, and sort the engine out, the gearbox will go back to normal.

Hello and welcome, MercB2202013!

As you've seen, many of our members use Independents (Indys) like Wayne or Alex. These guys provide tremendous service at rates that don't require a mortgage (!) and help to our members and because they have such a lot of experience you'll be in safe hands. You'll also find that they value your business!

As @alexanderfoti says, it probably has gone into limp mode (sounds like mine about a year ago) which can be confusing but suggests another possible problem that needs to be sorted - the car needs to be interrogated on STAR (that's the MB electronic diagnosis system) and when used by someone who knows what they're doing it will help to arrive at an accurate solution which is a lot better and more economical than some of the "try this/try that" you get from some garages.

btw: Has the Auto box ever been serviced? As Wearsafoxhat says, it's supposed to be done every 40,000 miles. A transmission service is more than just a fluid change (e.g.: the gasket and filter etc is replaced) and this is where an indy will usually save you money)!

Thanks for this. Thank god I've tried it agin today and it is driving normally. So it was limp mode as opposed to the gearbox going bust. Where are you based? Google is telling me Tonbridge. Will need to check how far from Ilford (ig2) exactly. Could we speak over the phone to discuss costs for diagnosing etc and earliest you could see it.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I didnt really ask about that when buying. I'll check the service documents but i doubt its had a gearbox service.

My bro in law has Outel diagnostic tool. I think it went into limp before but i dismissed it. He wiped the codes to see if it would come back but it didnt for a week and half until now. But strangely the start/stop wouldnt work anymore. Is it worth running it now and sharing the diagnostic with you guys . He said he is just a bit concerned it may drain the aux battery as that may be the reason the start/stop stopped working.

Wayne is in Harrow?

Hopefully it is the atf fluid as the 2nd gear was a bit stressed even in non limp mode.

You could also try FORERRA in Hammersmith, Des is used to rebuilding MB A & B class autoboxes.
A class specialist, but is increasingly doing Bclass too.

He has STAR etc.

So finally got time to plug in the Autel. Its showing issues with exhaust flap and actuator. Here are the 3 codes.

Anyone had this issue?

It could be either the EGR exhaust flap or the actual flap in the exhaust near the backbox. The AUTEL definitions are likely incorrect so best to plug it into something MB specific before you replace expensive components.

The flap in the exhaust pipe near the back of the car is cheaper to replace than the "throttle" in the engine bay.
