I have been told by local garage that my wifes 1999 aclass is in a non repearable state as a power surge caused by jump starting it off a jag blew the super fuses and also the ecu that is situated in gear box as it is a semi auto 1.4. Can anybody advise on this please?????

Is it a clutcless manual or an auto with tip as the ecu is not situated in the gearbox in a clutchless manual, the box is the same as a manual but its got a automatic clutch system located in the n/s wing. if an auto box, the tcu is in the sump.

Thanks for that, he is looking into it tomorrow. He said i should buy a new ecu for the car and hopefully this will resolve the problem. Fuses (inc super fuses) were blown in a power surge when the aclass was jump started by a Jag. This didn't start it so the AA put a booster charger on it which powered the lights but would,nt start the engine. In the end the AA man shorted direct to altenater which started the engine but the car would not engage into gear!. The garage suggested i buy an ecu and hope this resolves the problem but he can't gaurentee it will! Can you advise me on where to purchase as ecu and at what cost would i expect to pay.
Many thanks

if you could answer star's question mr crompo, or tell us your vin number (in the windscreen) we need to know more about your car to comment.

what provenance does the garage that advised the ecu have? they really need to be an MB specialist with the correct diagnostic equipment to comment.

right, your gearbox just has a couple of sensors on to see the shifting of gears - no ecu there at all.

the clutch unit is mounted in the n/s wheel arch and, i believe, has the control unit built in. they can stop working and need re-adapting. equally other faults can stop them working or they do fail, and yes possibly due to that jump start.

here is a picture. http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.as...6503&VIN=*&CT=F&cat=66A&SID=29&SGR=030&SGN=02

can you confirm it starts ok (with good battery), it goes into gear ok (gear lever feels like normal), but does not move when you rev it? and are there any other new faults you are aware of?

I would think carefully if your garage tells you that the ecu is in the gearbox, as the control/operating unit is under n/s wing. you really need to have the faults read.

There is no way they tested power supplies and grounds to the ECU before condeming it, since they dont know where the ECU is. It needs more looking at before a decision is made to spend money on a control unit.
