Hi guys.

Had a search and learned that oil replacement is recommended. :-(

My 1999 E200 auto has done 98K miles, today I had a sudden jolt when stopping and it's evident that the 'box has trashed itself. :-(

Mega noisy in first three gears, quiet in 4th and 5th.

Whilst stationary, it's noisy in 'N' or 'P' but silent in 'D'.

Where to go, (I'm near Leeds) and how much to take?

I've had 'Dronsfield Merc' recommended as an honest supplier.

Any dealings anyone?

Has anyone had a new 'box fitted in one of these cars? £?

I've got a 'V' reg C200 Auto Estate with 100K miles too, gearbox oil change deffo?

Until today, I've had this car for 2 fault free years/100K miles, and I've been looking for a diesel Estate replacement. In view of today's events, I need the replacement asap, any 3 year old <50K mile E270 CDi estates for sale here? :!:

Give's a steer please guys, 8) I help loads of new users on BMW forums.

In my neck of the woods, recon. 'box around £1200, fitting and ATF around £300 (indy garage, multiply by 4 if it's Merc!) plus of course the VAT. I would recommend you take the advice of an Auto-Box specialist.
Good luck.

Thanks Tom.

I've been told that MB will supply a recon' 'box for £2800 with an 'exchange surcharge' of £1100, making the gearbox £1700 supplied only. (+ VAT obviously)

I've also been told that quite often, the dealer 'picks fault' with the exchange gearbox, disallowing a portion of the exchange refund.

Any advice? :(

£3600 to 'drive in, drive out' at dealer?

I would prefer not.

If you pick up the thread on page 4 here Simon ('No forward drive (Auto)') you'll see what I did! My car is much older than yours of course but even if it hadn't been I'd have had to go this route simply because of my financial situation. Hope it helps you decide.

Simon,
Give Merc Care in Pudsey a ring - They know MB inside out and are honest, reliable and local. Mine is back in there shortly for an Gbox oil cooler pipe thats corroded apparently. Given your experience and general advice on here, I think I may ask them to change the oil and filters on mine, irrespective of the 'sealed for life' BS given out by MB..
cheers,
Julian

P.s. For a second opinion, Eastwoods on Roseville road are auto specialist.

Thanks everyone.

I've used Merccare before Julian and they've been fine. I need this fixing quickly so I've got www.autogearbox.co.uk in Huddersfield collecting it today.

Fully rebuilt 'box including new 'bevel gear' that costs £580 apparently, recon'd torque converter etc. £1600 + VAT all-in, including collection.

The guy told me that it's a common fault due to lack of lubrication. He recommends changing the oil periodically.

I'll post the results.

Thanks, Simon.

Buy your Mrs. a nice pressy with the £2k you've just saved by not using a Merc stealership!

Or not buy her a pressie ever again, because of the unexpected £2K I've just spent. 8)

Collection was efficient and a loan car was offered, they're trying to get it back to me this week, which would be good. :D

Fixed.

72 hours from collection to delivery.

Sounds sweet, done 200 miles and the change etc is better than pre-shred.

Excellent, polite, fully informed of progress service. Car is spotless and all the shredded bits were returned.

Providing it doesn't fcuk up, I'd deffo recommend this lot for Auto work in the North.(Free collection within 100 miles.)

Id take this up with MB UK. Having been one of the salesmen at a stealership I know that MB do not always frown on cases like this.

Best example I can offer. 31 year old car. Cracked wishbones.....replaced as a good will gesture as MB said "They should have lasted longer than that!"

My motors close to 15 years old and with 142k on the clock I would still go after them, nothing to loose from it.

P.S ( Not with MB UK anymore lol )

I contacted Dronsfield who were very efficient and offered me a used 'box for £750 + etc, seemed like a good outfit.

My car's done 70K miles since it last visited a MB garage, I wouldn't expect them to do anything really.

I'm considering buying a new shape 52 plate E270 Cdi with 5 speed Auto. (It's described as 'semi Auto' which I don't know anything about.)

Does this car have the same gearbox as the previous model that I've recently had problems with?

Tia.
