Mercedes brought out a modified fluid wich helps prevent premature wear to the brake bands, what I am not sure of is exactly what model this is aimed at.

Speaking of gear oil-I have a 1995 C220 petrol which has done 72K miles. Brought it to a specialist for a full service as per logbook, and although it was due a gear oil change (autobox), he didn't do so. According to him, it is not necessary to change gear oil every 36K but as necessary. I was a little annoyed, especially since it was agreed that he would do it at first. I'm just worried about any damage to the autobox. Any comments, especially from experts?

Hi,

MB say that the auto box oil should be replaced every 36k or 4yrs. Which ever is sooner. There is a chance that the filter could collaspe and starve the box of oil. Thereby allowing excessive wear on the clutch packs. Do get to alarmed. It wont happen overnight But if MB say to do it, and you asked for it to be done. Then I can't understand why they never carried out your instructions as you have said. Unless they were not competent to carry out the work?!?!

When you have the work carried out. Make sure they replace the torque converter oil as well. This is where the vast amount of oil is contained

PS, give us a ring. We'd be happy to carry out the work for you! Numbers at the url above.

PPS, Just another thought. When will you know its necessary. I thought thats why you have the vehicle serviced (preventative maintenance). So by the time its necessary, the box will not of sustained any damage. There are some funny ideas out there!

Andy,

Thanks for the advice. I will be having a word with the garage people about this. As I will be requiring new pads in about 3-4K, I will get the 'box sorted too. I am based in London though, and haven't got a good excuse to come north in the near future, but if I do, I will look you up.
