Hi all.

I'm new to the forum. Thanks in advance for your help.

I have recently purchased a 2007 W211 E220 CDi estate with 203K miles. I've had it for a few weeks now, and the gearbox has started to jump in low gears, especially when cold and at low speeds. The rev counter also flutters a little bit when in traffic at low speed - going up and down from 15 - 25 mph. It feels like the gearbox doesn't know which gear to be in at times. There are no problems when on a run, and it will change up/down fine on the motorway. The gearbox oil has been changed in the last 5K miles and the level was checked this week and is ok.

Thanks,
Jon

Been there done that.
Torque convertor sounds like the culprit.
Mine did exactly the same, and was misdiagnosed to the tune of over £1000 in parts and labour from turbo to gearbox.
My guess would be TC. If it's not sorted straightaway it will cause swaff to travel through the transmission and you'll end up replacing both the TC and gearbox as happened to me ;)

Thanks for the reply. Did you have a diagnostic done? Did say anything about the torque converter? Cheers

Not at first, the dealer I got it off lead me in the wrong direction with what he thought would be the issue (turbo actuator) instead of being honest (never buy a warmed up car)
So I tried an another Indy, who said it was turbo vanes locking up. Silly me took it as turbo, when he meant, torque convertor!
I replaced the turbo, that didn't work. I then realised what my Indy meant, So I replaced the transmission next. This lasted about 700 miles, then the problems came back. I took it back to my Indy again to get him to have a look at it. The next morning he got into the car when it was cold for a test drive. He didn't get far, first gear change up, he knew exactly what it was, like he had told me before. This time I bought a TC and transmission and replaced them together.
Been no issues since with the transmission and I would have travelled 8000 miles.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to book it into an indy for diag and checks.
