Hi All,
it looks like Television was right the fault is back.
The car stood for a while & when started the battery was down & the same problem returned...gearbox in limp home.
I read some posts on here & left it running for 10 mins then restarted..fault gone.
The battery that was on the car was a 74ah with cold cranking of 690 but when I went to unipart they said it should be a 88ah but he was quoting for the e300td w210 as the e320cdi was not on there list, so I bought one came home fitted it & still the car goes in limp home unless left to run for a few minutes.
The battery was showing 12.5v before starting but when the engine was cranking dropped to 10v.
Do you think it wants the ecu fault resetting or the new battery not have enough cold cranking ie does the w210 e300td have the same battery as the e320cdi?
Hope you don't as cross eyed as I did writing this
Thanks.

give it a good run as it might have sat on a self for months prior to your buying it. & it's not uncommon for a new battery to be duff

Hi,
yes I thought this & give it a long slow charge over night but still the same.
It holds at around 12.5v.
Had it running a couple of hours ago it was fine but just tried it & back to limp mode again.
I wonder if my new battery at 730 cold cranking is up to the job.
Thanks.

The 320 cdi will need at least an 88amp hr battery to ensure a constant 11+ volt supply, the weaker battery will only let you down.. and the gearbox codes will need resetting ..

Hi,
This is the battery spec for 320CDi:

BOSCH BATTERY TYPE 019 100Ah 480/800 353Lx175Wx190H 0/1B13
BOSCH - 017/019

£75 + VAT from Euro car parts. Anything rated less and you will struggle in this weather.

Ref your gearbox problems have you checked the gearbox ecu for oil contamination, its a common problem with this gearbox and causes all sorts of problems ,,and its a fairly easy fix..just a thot

Hi,
thanks for that guys.
I have taken the battery back & got a refund as it was under the right spec
I found this web site....
http://www.performancebatteries.co.uk/find_battery/cars#battery_info

I'm going to try a higher power battery than the one I had & hope that clears the limp home if not I will go & get the fault codes reset.

It never rains but it pours ea- I had a water pipe burst on the house so been busy fixing that:mad:
Thanks again guys.

Brad those batteries in the link are any old make, and not that cheap.
All large towns have Car Parts people that supply the local garages, known as Motor factors.
Most sell good makes like Exide, Bosch, Banner , lucas, give them a try, also Mackro and Costco do Exide

Hi,
called Costco & they didn't list the 320cdi & couldn't do a search any other way so I suppose I will have to go in person & have a look around them.
I called a few motor factors...PMF, CES etc but there batterys were also uknown.
Eurocar parts don't list the 320cdi on there website as don't German & swedish:mad:
Mercedes dealer wants £111 for a 100ah which I thought was ok?
Lastly National Tyres of all places have a Varta blue 100ah for £84.

While I was on to Mercedes I asked about the problem I was getting & they said resetting the codes will make no difference if the limp home has gone when I restart & said it must be the cold cranking power of the battery as it lowers the volts to low.
Thanks all.

Hi,
Right the new battery 100ah/900 cold crank came this morning & I gave it a slow charge for a few hours.
I've just fitted it showing 12.9v & guess what, still in limp home!
Left it running for 4/5 mins & restarted limp home gone?
Took it for a drive turning it on & off a few times & it was fine but came home left it for 15 mins & when started limp home back again..battery showing 12.7v.
Any ideas guys please?
Thanks.

Hi,
sounds good but what was the mb dealer service guy on about saying the stored fault codes will not cause a limp home after restarting?
Thanks again mate.

This is getting hard and against all we know, the gearbox memory is very small, would clearing it help, wait for further advice

Hi,
ok will do but just a thought....
I have dissconnected the little ecu fan that I was told to do in other post on here when the engine fuse kept blowing, could this be part of the limp home problem?
Car was fine after dissconecting the fan.
Thanks.

No, the 10 amp fuse which blows putting the abs/esp lights on is completely different, as i said in the write up, sometimes the fault clears after a new battery fitted, sometimes it dont, you need now to have the codes read and cleared!

Hi All,
Just arrived home from MB TECH Warrington having had the fault codes reset so I'm hoping its ok,
but I won't know for a while as it tends to do it when its been stood for a few hours.
MB TECH charged me just £20 to reset the codes & gave me a lot of advice & info etc for free.
There prices are very reasonable & they are honest MERCEDES BENZ TRAINED STAFF/OWNERS who took the car in instantly even though they were busy which was nice after a 30 mile drive to see them!!!
I will let you know how I go later
Thanks again.
