For a start you wouldnt be able to get it out of park!

I know the effect SAM of the switch, I was jut thinking of a high resistance leak, not enough to upset the usual things, but just enough to cause a problem in the CAN

brad, do me a favour and when you go from p to d,or from r to d, etc go through n really fast, dont go slowly through n ie leave it in n, shift really fast through n every time. try this and let me know,

Sorry to butt in at this late stage. Can I ask, what were the fault codes?

If you want to try it without using the brake you can release the lever with a pen stuck down the side of the lever.

I am going to guess the codes were to do with the trans solenoid voltage supply. If so then maybe something else is pulling system voltage down on cranking. Faulty starter motor or engine earth.
From memory the solenoids on that one are fed from the mars bars relay (K40) and on later ones from the trans ecu. You could monitor the solenoid supply during cranking.

Edit -
I have just read the origonal thread on this problem. Neither the cranking voltage not the solenois supply would effect the gear position indicator or make the lever stiff. I suggest you try the gear lever module as was suggested very early on. Since you mentioned your budget is tight, try a used one. they are plug and play, no coding.

Hi Guys,
Right are you ready;)
I've just started the car pushed a screw driver in the gear lever release button (Autofix) & selected D whilst flying through N ( MB TECH ) & repeated various ways not stopping in N....still in limp home.
Also tried above pressing brake pedal.

Malcom...I would of tried the brake switch 1st but had to move it to open the door wide enough to get in the footwell.

I turned off then disconnected the brake switch (2 small black connections over brake pedal) & restarted,
the results were ABS ESP lights on but no limp home..
Trouble is that was prob down to it being running for 2 mins for above test.
I will have to leave it till tommorrow morning to know as I've started it today...what a pain

Thanks for all you help & Autofix feel free to butt in anytime.

I see what you mean.
They did say the codes coming were for the gearbox electric pack or gear selector.
Cheers.

Yes I am still following it. it does not matter about the ABS coming on, it was just that this is all part of the CAN, and I was curious as to see if it had a small leak

Hi Malcom,
pulled the brake switch out & started the car selected the gears with the release button & guess what still in limp :?

This time the car was only running for 1 minute turned it off,
came back to it 2 hours later with the switch back in place & it was fine.

One thing I noticed that when I tried,
it went from P to R to N & back in any order & shows the right position on the dash,
it was when I selected D it went pair shaped.
Bear with me on that one & I will try again tommorrow morning.

Thinking about it now its actually not much of a problem really with it only wanting to be run for a minute or two which I THINK is shorter since the new battery was fitted but could'nt swear on that.

Thanks again mate.
