E240 1999(facelift) 5 Speed Automatic Approx 150,000 miles

My gearbox has just started making a scraping noise - possibly from the rear of the box. Everything works OK but I'm concerned something will suddenly break.

My local Mercedes (non-dealership) garage has had a look and can't find any external problem and cannot offer an explaination.

Any ideas?

I was planning to sell the car next year (maybe after another 10,000 miles) - will it last that long? Should I get rid of it now? How much is a recon gearbox if this one breaks?

Take it to a gearbox specialist for a listen. Expect to pay between 1500 and 2000 for a recon box and new TC at a specialist. MB obviously a lot more. Have you tried changing the oil?
