I would be very grateful for suggestions of a garage to take my 1988 230CE to have the automatic transmission checked and very possibly overhauled. The one estimate I have obtained is over £1000 and it could not be established whether this work was really necessary.

I can only offer an anti-recommendation...........
Don't go near the Auto trans palce in Hartfield Road Wimbledon, they are a bunch of crooks :evil:

What model and first three digits of chassis No
If it is the old hydraulic box yes they are very good to rebuild
If it's latter electronic Box you will have an early model its not worth rebuilding ther are 20-30 mods to the later box try and get an MB recon unit you may also have to change control unit as well
