my autobox always changes up very early - 15mph 2 to 3, 20mph into fourth. i can hold the fourth to fifth change for anything up to 100mph, but on a light throttle it changes at ~40mph. this is all well and good for fuel consumption, but not too clever if i need to accelerate quickly.

kickdown works from 5 to 4 at any speed under 80mph, but the other gears do not kick down at all, regardless of whether the gearbox switch is in N or S.

i suspect i may have some electrical problem somewhere, but before i get into that i need to know the correct setting for the pressure control cable from accel linkage to gearbox. the haynes manual covers my model only sketchily, as it includes the MY up to 1993 but not beyond, and the indicators in the book do not correspond to those on my car.

the pressure cable was undone when the head came off, and i'm sure it went out of adjustment at some stage in all that. would be grateful if anyone could offer any pointers as to settings, procedure etc!

If your problem was only apparent after cyl head work ,are you sure all the vacuum pipes were replaced properly? There is one pipe in particular that may have become detached ; from the air box to the gearbox there is one i think its white and it connects on the offside of the gearbox towards the front ;it controls the gearbox shift delay on acceleration. Easy enough to check ,just suck to see if its connected . If it has been dislodged ,good luck as it is a b----r to get back on.
Cheers George.
