Pretty sure gearbox bearing or something gone. A150 07 reg
Can feel it through gear lever and noise goes on dipping clutch. My Mec thinks it’s one of the main bearings.
Any ideas for either repair or replace Suppose buying a breaker could have probs of its own.
Does anyone know of a known issue with this gearbox ? 76000 miles only on it.

I assume its a manual gearbox as you mention dipping the clutch?
Are you sure it's not the release bearing on the clutch instead of a gearbox issue?
Get it diagnosed before buying parts in hope it will solve the problem.

I'd be inclined to agree with your mechanic...the noise goes when the clutch is depressed , and I think that is happening because when you press the clutch pedal, you are "disconnecting" the engine from the transmission. Release the clutch, and the engine re-connects to the transmission, putting it under load again, hence the noisy bearing. Feeling the vibration through the gear lever, sems to prove it. To really confirm it, you will need to remove the box and strip it down,,,, but from what I hear about MB manual transmissions , they do tend to be more problematic than MB Auto Transmissions. I'm sure that some one here on the forum who has experience of them will be along. If you do go down the repair route, while the transmission is out, would be a good idea and oppurtunity to replace the clutch release bearing, and maybe the clutch assembly too, as AMgeed mentioned.

What's this ?
Strip down the gearbox to test for a defective main bearing ?

You will note from my post that I suggested that someone on the forum who has experience in repairing MB manual transmissions would be along shortly ?

Release bearing or 1st motion shaft bearing ( the one supporting, transferring . drive from clutch to mainshaft.
I would rebuild it.but then ,i can do this myself.not wanting to remove it 2x . you would have 50% chance on a breakers box.
Another way look whole car, drive to know good.if really good ,change car break old one for bits ?
Either way,box out.so xfingers cud just be release bearing.

Hi all
Thanks for replies. Looks like box out then and rebuild by specialist. is this kind of wear common at 76000 miles ! What would happen if just left alone ?

Normally, when a bearing starts to wear, it generates noise and vibrations. If it's not replaced, then eventually it can collapse, and play merry hell with the surrounding components. But long before that happens, the noise and vibrations will drive anyone listening to it crazy..

I'd drain the oil and see what metal is in it, if it has a magnetic drain plug and it looks like a Christmas tree then you can be sure a bearing is on it's last legs. If its non-magnetic put a strong magnet (a welding magnet is ideal) in a plastic bag and leave it in the oil you drained for a while and see what it picks up. A release bearing is a possibility if it isn't adjusted properly and is spinning under partial load all the time but generally they growl when the clutch is depressed when gone.
