I have 2001 c220 CDI Avantgarde, The problem is when you are driving it for a while it will sick’s in gear. When it is stuck in gear the cruise control does not work, the triptronic does not work and the button above the gear selector does not work. But when I stop the car turn the ignition of remove the key and I restart the car the gears work and the gear changes. I have read on this site that it could be the battery so I had it checked today but it is fine, any thoughts on what else it could be, Thanks for any help

Thank You for the suggestion I will get it checked in the morning, I was driving around for about 45 minutes or so when I noticed that the cars gears were stuck again, so I turned off the engine and removed the key to make the gears work again. I then took it to a tyre and battery centre were they checked it for me. The guy there said when the engine is turned off it is at 12V and with the engine running it was up at 14v and that there was nothing wrong with the battery . When this happens there is no error message on the console. The only time an error will show is when you try to engage the cruise control when the gears are stuck. Thanks again for the response

i think what the guy did at the battery place was check your alternator output. i know of a few old school mechanics that use this method, even now! a heavy duty voltage drop tester is whats required to check your battery, if its starting ok.

I had the same prob for a while and ended up replacing the battery.

If the battery checks out ok, it could be the loom connecting to the electroplate in the gearbox, or the electroplate itself. This may come up in a diagnostic check as either an n2/n3 speed sensor failure or loss of communication with the gearbox ecu.

There have been a few posts about this. Will try to find one and post a link.

Hi Blakey, if you do find any threads could you please send them to me as well. I have the same problem with a 320cdi diesel. Occassionaly the gearbox does not change up and the cruise is inop. switch off and on and everything is OK.

Many thanks,
Nawhit
