After a lot of messing about I've put a genuine catalytic converter on my C200. £760 is a lot of money to spend on a 10 year-old car, but it was without doubt worth it. The pattern cat I've had on for the past 9 months never sounded right, and last week it broke up and blocked the exhaust pretty comprehensively. I took it back to GSF at Farnham who were very good (no arguments about oil contamination/engine tune), but the replacement they wanted to give me was dreadful quality (do not fit one of these unless you're about to trade the car in!) I got my money back and ordered the OE one from Tony Purslow (who were prepared to match the price quoted by http://www.mercedes-benz-parts.co.uk).

Now it's as quiet as a library at 70mph, and I love it. Which is just as well, as it's blown my budget for a Triumph Spitfire to play with at weekends

I agree, although I'm finding it increasingly difficult to source genuine wing mirror spiders :-(

Did the rubbish cat have a makers name on ?

Although Eberspacher are the OE supplier they just don't
seem to last past 100k/7 years on 4 cylinder MB's.On the IL6
they last forever my E320 is on the original.I'm wondering if anyones tried
Bosal cats ? They are OE on some makes and the centre and rear exhaust box on my E320 are Bosal date stamped 1995.
The Bosal cat is only £177 inc vat. Here's the link to the importers fitment guide and pricelist: http://www.leisureshack.co.uk/osb/showitem.cfm/Category/Exhausts_9

The (first) rubbish cat was UK made, but I didn't recognise the name. The 2nd much worse cat had no markings, I suspect it was made by somebody on work experience. Goodness knows what GSF are doing supplying parts like these, why not just supply the Eberspacher version direct?

I was tempted by the Bosal cat (they didn't offer one when the original cat failed) but several people in the trade said the only good solution for MB/BMW is OEM, and to be honest I was fed up with messing about.

The reason I asked for the name was there should perhaps be a FAQ on this...your not the first person to have wasted time and money on replacement cats.
Eurocarparts do from time to time have OE Eberspacher exhausts and cats slightly cheaper than Stealers EG. W210 diesel estate centre and rear box for £179.
