Whilst driving in a hire car in Germany, on a business trip, we got flashed by a speed camera. A letter - in German - has now arrived at my office saying that we were doing 92km/h in a 70km/h zone. I haven't translated it (due to my lack of proficiency at German!) but it seems to be asking for the name of the driver etc.

Does anyone know where one stands regarding speeding offences in Germany? The driver (not me) doesn't get points on his licence does he?

In our defence we were late for our flight home, having taken 2.5 hours on a journey that only took 1.5 hours on the way there. A European Cup football match nearby apparently.

Send it back, according to the above you were well below the 700km speed limit quoted unless of course you had hired a Typhoon in which case you deserve to be booked for not using the afterburner:p:p

lived in germany for 2 years and had a new civic type R. Got a few speeding tickets.
All you have to do is pay the money. the faster you go the hire the cost.
in less you are going way over the limet then a ban when you deside to take it that year or 2. not that i ever got a ban.
They will send you a photo of the driver and you say it was you.

Hope that helps

Ps never payed over 100 euros doing 62 in a 50.

It was my intention to pay any fine that came - we shouldn't have been going that fast at the junction in question. Caught up in the desperate desire to not miss the plane and we were just 10 minutes away from the airport, in the dark with no street lighting and no speed restriction signs that we saw (though I'm sure they were probably there)... If that's 'flouting' then I'm sorry...

I just wanted to know if anyone knew the procedure as this German letter is unintelligible to me!

If you do not have to go back in the same car then you would not have to pay

If you cannot understand the letter then how could they expect you to pay the fine. As they knew it was being sent to the UK it sould have been in English. Don't pay it.

The hire company has obviously given your company's name to the police,so they may well have also furnished details of the person or persons who were insured to drive, together with details from any documentation you presented(driving licence, passport etc).Regarding points,I believe that moves are afoot to make it possible for an UK driver to receive points for offences comitted abroad. This may even be in place now.I would tend to hang fire and wait for the next step-if there is one.

Ive been flashed a few times, in my own private cars, in hire cars and in merc factory cars! In all but my own, Ive had a ticket, sometimes with a photo. With some hire car companies, the money is automatically deducted off your credit card and all you get is an advisory to this effect.

You dont get points, yet, but they are working towards a common database.

Germany is very strict on speeders, you can freely do 200mph, but the negative side is they do strictly enforce the limited areas, quite often with mobile cameras, unmarked patrol cars and police hiding behind bushes.

I was once raced on the A8 from Munich in a CLK by an unmarked car, I took the bait, raced, only to get pulled over, so beware!

NB. If your in an expensive car (newish Merc), expect to be stopped randomly, they do check you and your papers as a lot of Eastern Europeans and Italians like to steal these cars and head for the borders.

Strangely, it doesn't apply equally to the Poles, Romanians, Lithuanians etc etc., who drive in the UK.

We have human rights laws Jez, other countries do not

You are so right! Would the UK authorities chase after some of the aforementioned? 'NOT'

Speeding in 'furrin parts

When ever I've been dinged for a speeding or parking ticket in a rental car, its appeared on my credit card - with an added "processing charge" by the rental Co. End of argument really.

Even if you're caught speeding in you own car, it's probably smarter to pay. A friend was dinged in New York state about 10 yrs ago, and ignored it. 2 yrs ago he was hit again, and after checking his license etc., the cop returned from his cruiser with "please get out of the car, Sir" and arrested him on an 8 year old warrant! These ****** computers never forget.

So.. das kops may be vaiting patiently!!

Scan it and email it to me, I'll claim to have translated it for you but will probably ask my colleague. I live in Germany.

However, I wouldn't pay it if I were you. Grow a beard, shave your head and get some plastic surgery so they can't identify you. Next time you drive in German, wear a mask when you're driving like every other expat ;)

There was a great story here a few weeks ago. An English RHD Audi A4 had been caught speeding on camera numerous times and each time the guy had a puppet in the front windscreen with a smiley face. The camera wasn't able to identify the passenger side (on a LHD car) so he's been getting away with it somehow.

Scanned and emailed - thanks!

I do have to go back to the same part of Germany once or twice a year, so I will need to get this sorted probably. Not me driving but...
