Got flashed a month back near Bremen, in a hire car, and just received the penalty notice exactly one month from the the date of the "crime". In the UK they must serve the penalty within 14 days, does anyone know if there is a similar limitation in Germany. All the paperwork is in German with no translation. Also Hertz debited my account for 23 euros to cover the admin cost for handing over my details to the authorities (only took them about a week).

I will wait and see, and will let you know. Great photo, you can see me recoiling from the flash in my face.

Hi,
This happened to a guy on another forum, and he decided to ignore it only to find that the hire company paid it and charged it to his credit card.

If you want a translation, pm me the details.

Thanks for the offer, I can make out most of it, however I am going to sit and wait, I have some enquiries being made in Germany with some of the natives.
I could claim infringement of my human rights as there is no translation.

Hertz will charge you as they will approach them if you ignore it.

Ive had several over the years in Hire cars and Demo cars (nice picture of me driving a Mercedes demo landed on my desk at work, in B&W)!

In your own car though, you wont get a penalty, yet!

Good thing is that you cant get points on your license, Yet! My German colleagues do, so it kinda ****es them off :)

sorry to be a bore, but...

FFS, don't be so pathetic!

You did the crime, do the time, (Pay the fine).

Take some responsibility for your actions!

Not saying you generally don't take responsibility for your own actions - but why shouldn't you pay the fine if you were caught breaking the law?

I'd ignore it. Also, how about you replace the credit card you used for the hire?... say it was destroyed in the wash or something. I would think the car hire firm would not be able to charge the replacement card should they ever try.

Debt collection is an international, certainly pan-european business! Would you really like to go down this lane and get your credit record tainted as Hertz sell the debt to a collector, for a fine?

It's the same account - so that wouldn't work anyway.

Normally I would (and have done so on home ground, even been fined for failing to disclose a driver when the offence occurred while I was abroad).
However as a matter of principle, in the uk the law is 14 days to serve penalty.
Hertz did their bit and gave my contact details and informed me in about 3 days. I can send a letter to relatives in Germany in 2/3 days, so why do they take a month.
The location of the camera was definitely a "trap" for drivers heading to the airport being situated at the junction of slip road off autobahn onto another autobahn (or so I thought at the time), but it was just an identical dual carriageway with a lower speed limit. Nearly lost it when this B great red light flashed in my eyes. So got a bit humpy about that as well I suppose.

What's the "NIP" period in Germany?

Yes, it's 14 days in the UK (14 days between the offence and them SENDING the nip - not necessarily you receiving it... ;) ), but the offence was in Germany, the fine is in Germany - so the NIP period is whatever German law says it is - anyone know?

They heff veys of making you pay.

You might find that on your next trip to the fatherland you get your collar felt as you come in at the airport. Non-payment of fines is serious stuff, even here in the good old lenient UK.

Unfortunately not true. The charge will still be accepted. Been there, tried that (with Paypal).

I live in Germany, and in the military, we have something like 14 days to pay once the notice has been served upon us. Our fines get sent to our units admin staff, so we have no choice other than paying:(

Good luck
