I have a 2017 15100 miles and had this from new. I have recently started to have a noise (like a bag of chisels) when I start the engine.

Can offer any advice.

It's an OM651 engine which has been known to have timing chain issues. Rattle on start up is a symptom. You should get it diagnosed without delay. If the chain goes or slips a cogs it's potentially goodnight vienna for the engine... An MB independant is your best bet. If you give us a clue where you are someone may be able to recommend an indy.

15k miles is very early for timing chain issues. Do you use stop start and do a lot of town driving?
As suggested get it checked by a good MB mechanic.

If it’s the second part of 2017, may still be under warranty so get it down to a Mercedes dealer ASAP.

Wow that is low , recently an older OM651 had timing chain issues but had received stupid 15 and 19K mile service intervals , coupled with probably 100% use of the Stop strain as car was London based .

Stop Start is advised by independents not to be used , coupled with LongLife ( funny name considering ) service intervals = mechanical carnage .

I have this eng in my ml250. My mitigation plan. Oil and filters at yrly intervals, regardless of km, same as everything I have with engine. currently about 5 k. And deffo no stop/start. A system in my view to keep Benz selling parts and us broke.
As for chocolate timing gears! I would love to see a material report on the material quality of those, the (well known) cynic in me thinks that the quality of ingredients in these gears has been cut to the bare min to reduce costs. To date I have never needed to replace a timing gear on Any car I have owned since I was 18,now 63! And I have had a good number....... Incl 5 previous Benz. So wot changed?

Do the basic's first, check the oil level. If low, or at the minimum, the chain will rattle more than if at the max!

Sometime if yr lucky you get away with changing the tensioner, as above check oil first I have yet to look for my tensioner but if anythig like w168 it won't be in an easy access place.some dh put engine in wrong way around on my car just to make working on it more hassle.
