Hi everyone, my GLA45 went into Mercedes for a new battery yesterday, when there they did their complimentary vehicle health check. I was told all brakes are ‘okay with 5mm of friction material left’. I have no idea what that means, is that a lot or do they need changing soon? The car is a GLA45 18 plate premium with 18k mileage.
Thanks everyone!

Welcome, means they want you to spend money unnecessarily...
The normal change over is 3mm in a performance car, in fact even when the brake warning comes on you've still 500 miles or so to get them changed.

Thanks John, so 2mm left. I don’t drive like an idiot all the time so how long roughly should they last? Only doing around 150 miles per week.

Wait until the warning light comes on then book it in for pad replacement

It's just a scare tactic to get additional highly profitable work.

They will probably last you at least another 4-6 months on that mileage , I work on 1mm per 2000 miles but that's just rule of thumb, sure other folks use a different calculation. As I said before you can wait until the brake light comes on, and you don't have to use MB dealers for replacements....

New pads have around 10 mm of friction material, so there's still half of it left. MOT testers will normally only fail at around 1.5mm remaining
