Hi all,

So after a week of smooth driving I have now discovered a rattle noise coming from what to me sounds like the boot of my 2016 GLC.

I have tried to isolate the issue with the following troubleshooting:
1. Removed baby's ISO fix. No fix
2. Removed boot floor cover and contents. No fix
3. Removed the boot retractable cover. No fix.
4. Put all the back seats in the unlocked folded position. No fix.

Im nearly all out of ideas at this rate. Only thing I have not tried is putting insulation tape on the boot door locking mechanism to rule out any play.

It appears to happen at slow speeds on an uneven surface.

Im hoping its not a suspension issue given I have only purchased the car and it may have been idle for a few months on a forecourt with the covid 19 pandemic.

Any suggestions or previous threads on this issue are more than welcome?

Thanks,
Rob

Spare wheel with its retaining screw would have been my first guess but as you’ve not got that then my only other idea might be something not quite seated fully in the well there a spare used to be, after that and if it’s only noticeable at low speed then it could be the bushes or a shock on its way out

sorry to cover the obvious but make sure you've not just a seat belt buckle rattling against the plastic....(ask me how I know...)

Hi John,

Lol how do you know??
Do you mean the buckle attach point to the plastic or the engagement with the seat latching itself?
I put the seats in the unlatched folded down position so they are not engaged with the buckle and no fix.

Thanks,
Rob

no, I was meaning when unlatched and hanging on the belt, possibly hitting the side of the car? I had it with the XC90, stupidly looked everywhere until I noticed!

Yeah tried that. There is also another lathing position which pushes the seats in a more upright position. I discovered it just as I was going back from my lunch break today. Il see if this makes any difference. Brought a mate out for a drive in it as a second opinion and he also maintains Its a trim issue somewhere.

No joy, still on the hunt for the source. Might take it to my mechanic at this stage as its driving me bonkers.

Is the rattle on a specific side, if it is the shocks then you could swap sides and see if the rattle travels,

Hi matty to me it sounds like it's isolated to the left side. The noise appears to be getting louder which now has me thinking it could well be a suspension issue. Noticed it rattles aswel when turning so my first port of call I'm thinking is the anti roll bar bushings have perished on one side. Hopefully it is that and a cheap fix.

Hi. Did you get the rattle on your GLC sorted. If so, what was causing it. I have the very same problem as you have been describing.
I’ve tried everything, I’ve even replaced the anti roll bar, anti roll bar bushes and anti roll bar connection rods. I still have the rattle. I definitely has nothing to do with the suspension.

Hi, unfortunately not yet. My wife drives it and she's learned to live with it. I brought it to my mechanic awhile back and he reckons it is the rear driver side shock or part of it. You could try that. My mechanic was due to replace thst at the next service next month but Iv more pressing matters at the moment with the GLC which need to be addressed first. Last week or two, there is a squeek coming from outside whenever I turn the steering wheel in either direction. Happens either when stationary or at low speeds. It also happens when I go over speed bumps aswel which is very strange. I think the steering in the car is electric so I'm hoping it ls not an expensive fix!
I love the car but these noises are testing my patience lately.
