Hi, I’ve been looking for something to protect my leather upholstery (leather on the data card as opposed to standard vinyl) and have read that Gliptone conditioner is up there with the best, so I bought some. I also have the Dodojuice cleanser and sealant. Haven’t used anything yet.

I am now reading that it is pointless to put Gliptone on modern leather because of the coating. Some say it will do nothing at best and will cause premature dirt / wear at worst.

What do others think?

thanks

I use it on my 2016 CLS with no issues. Soaks in so I think it's doing its job. The leather always feels smoother after I do it so I call BS that it doesn't work. !
Others may have different opinions...:D

Most modern leather is sprayed with vinyl paint so conditioners are pointless, if they are soaking in it is likely the leather is perforated and the conditioner is disappearing into the perforations. Best test is a drop of water on the leather, if it soaks in quickly it is natural dyed and would benefit from a conditioner. If it sits on the surface then a conditioner is only going to make it sticky in the long run and attract even more dirt.

Not sure how Glipsomething would be superior to these two .

How can it soak into leather that is coated with vinyl paint?
Either it's evaporating into the atmosphere or your vinyl coated leather has holes in it?
Your just wasting time & money.

Ok, so similar to what I have read. Some swear by it, others say any conditioner is useless.

I’ll try the water test to see whether water soaks into my Seats.

So if all real leather upholstery is vinyl coated, is there any reason to have ‘real’ over ‘pretend’?

Yes, it doesn’t crack and split anything like as bad...

My upholstery (W124) is leather and coated. I know this because the coating was applied by us when we restored the interior. The coating was as originally supplied when new.

Furniture Clinic will explain the issues to you.

But on the steering wheel it's a different story. Auchan cheap leather cream in repeated applications has restored dry, crisp leather to near new suppleness. But could have used Nivea as that's pretty good.

Lots of people feel better if they spend £20+ on a car product that looks as if it comes from Hermès or Dior.

So, in my case, creams are useless as they will not penetrate the coating, even if they are bought in Harrods.

Just my 2c worth.

So how about perforated leather, I have ventilated seats so there could actually be some use in leather conditioners on it, would it soak into the perforated edges and seep further into the leather?

Or just block the perforations over time

Lucky we all have different opinions or the world would be a boring place indeed.
I will continue using it and having pristine leather because of it! :D

Opinions don't come into it, 99% of all leather since 1997 has been coated with vinyl paint. That is a fact.

I've seen ink from a pen stain a rear leather seat. How did that get through the vinyl?

Who said it got through and didn't just dry in on top of the vinyl?
