This means one or more glow plugs have failed. You need to test the plugs, check the plugs for high resistance, you can do this at the plugs them selfs or from the loom coming of the glow plug relay to the plugs. Check the resistance to earth, one will most likely have a totally different reading to the others

How did you get on with this problem hitower2 ?
My C220 CDi does the same ritual, the light comes up but goes off after a few seconds at best. But once started the light returns for about 45 - 60- seconds then stays off. It does seem hard to start on snowy mornings too. Maybe all of mine are duff? :-(

If one fails you may as well change them all as the other ones won't be far behind.

I get the same glowplug light problem on my recently acquired 'R' reg MWB 310D, and am wondering if it's related to the hissing noise I hear at revs. The local garage changed the hose on top of the engine which ferrys air about, saying it had split. They also repaired some wiring they said had been bodged. Had a noticeable increase in performance for a couple of days, then the hissing returned louder than before, the glowplug light comes on for about a minute before going off again, and am back to crawling up gentle inclines in 4th gear. Just finished Swarfega-ing meself after a session tightening jubilee clips, cleaning out the airfilter bay (which was clogged with leaves), changing the airfilter, wiping crud out of the turbo inlet etc; but still the same problems. I'm new to vans, diesels and turbos, so any help gratefully received, especially as I'm driving down to Cornwall from Worcestershire in a couple of days....

cheers, Jim
