It means there is a fault with one of the glow plugs, does it sound a bit rough when starting from cold for a few seconds?
You can test the glow plugs with a ammeter to see which one has packed up, I recently had the same thing on my C250TD, one plug was faulty but I replaced all five whilst I had the engine stripped. Not sure about the CDi, but on the C250TD they are quite difficult to get at so the labour is the highest cost of the job. The glow plugs should be about £8-£12 each.
Hiya. know this is probably a bit late but I had same prob on my 99' 220cdi. I changed all the plugs (after advice gained from this site) it took me about 15 mins!!, engine cover off and there sitting there waiting!.
Only upset was the £50 cost from stealership for parts.
Oh yeh, dont panick if you get the light again next time you start as it took mine two starts to clear the fault and stop illuminating the light..
