Glow Plug Removal

I have a C250TD which has had a single glow plug 'snap' whilst trying to be reoved by my local garage. This neccesitated the plug being drilled which meant the head of the engine was removed.

I have been given a bill of £650 which I think is excessive. Before I go back to the garage in question and start complaining I want to be sure of my facts.

Can any one shed any light what would be involved in terms of labour time and parts for a job light this.

There are special glow plug removal kits on the market and if the garage had one of these the head did not have to come off, pop into your local motor factor and see if they have this months " professional Motor mechanic" as MB glow plug removal kits are featured there this month

Thanks for the prompt response, but he has already done the work.

I was going to have a crack at replacing them myself so I will look into your suggestion for future reference.

Any one help me on my orginal post ??

Thanks.

I'd say £650 was very reasonable. The head gasket and bolt set cost around £200 and the head may have needed specialist machine shop work to remove the glowplug

What does the breakdown of the bill say? I'd expect it to be around £200 parts, £100 specialist machining and the rest labour. If that's the case the labour is very cheap and they've done hours they haven't billed you for

The garage has no liability for snapped glowplugs

Thanks for the reply Nick.

The plug did need specialist work to remove and I know from checking the forum that the plugs snapping is a all too common problem and dont blame the garage at all. Just wanted a more informed view than my own before handing over my hard earned.

Neil.

Take him a beer in, he deserves a drink for that price, get a quote from a MB garage, you'll be shocked.

My point is here, and that has been missed, with a correct glow plug removal kit every thing can be done in situ even if they all break

Talking of removing heads,,A friend just came round in a 1959 Riley 6/99 In the hand book it says.

To remove cylinder head and de coke £6 1s 6d
To lap in all valves --------------------£1 0s 7d extra

The going wage then was £13 a week for a TV engineer
