Does my 2.2 C Class W205 diesel 651 engine have glow plugs ? I ask because I was told to leave the glow plugs on for 20 secs in this cold weather. But with the keyless go I just press the button and it starts. Also I don't recall seeing a Glow plug symbol on the dash, I suppose I could just take the button out and start it with the key. But if there are no glow plugs it's pointless taking the button out.

I'm guessing that advice was from someone who used to have a diesel about 30 years ago.

The glow duration is determined by the ECU. Even on my old jalopy with the OM646, if I turn the key and leave in position 2, it will only glow for the duration determined by the ECU. That's in the order of a few seconds, even at current temperatures.

With a push button start, the starter will not be engaged until the glow has finished. So you don't have to do anything different just because it's cold.

Many of the more recent vehicles will do a pre glow. Opening a door or putting a foot on the brake pedal can wake the ECU and trigger a short pre glow. So when you do press the start button the glow duration needed is less.

Many thanks for the reply's, I have since looked at the dash light's and noticed the glow plug curly symbol, it only light's up for a split second that's why I never noticed it before.

Yes, the dash light does not represent the glow time any more. Just get in and drive
