hi learned fellows.:D
Just helping a friend change oil on a t reg diesel sprinter and he noticed the oil is a bit gluggy.
a friend of mine once told me engine oil can be flushed through with diesel by pouring it through the oil filler cap and running the engine for a few minutes.
Is this still good advice? If not was it ever?

Gluggy : slow, sluggish; especially when referring to the operation of a computer

You could try a flushing oil, which is made to clear out the old oil, alternatively any cheap oil, run it for a couple of hundred miles then change again to a decent oil. I used to put some petrol/oil mix in the filer and wait for that to all drain out in a Mk1 Fiesta. However I've not heard of the diesel method.

Flushing oil is very thin, so is deisel you only run for a few mins under no load.

Hi,
I have a 2002 Sprinter with the CDi engine, and I previously had a VW LT35 with the TDi engine. Every time I service (and i serviced Sprinter just last week) i do just what you said...Put about a pint of straight diesel into the oil filler cap and run for a few minutes. It makes no clatters or other worrying noises but after the service it is quieter, more noticeably with the older van than the newer, as the newer is pretty quiet anyway. I was originally recommended to do this by a diesel specialist when enquiring about intermittent tappet noise from my VW. Incidentally this cured my tappet noise.

Hope this helps.

I haven't heard of the diesel flush before and would be too frightened to risk it.

When I change oil I just make sure the engine is as hot as possible then leave it to drain for at least an hour. I consider the best flushing action to be regular use and proper servicing with good oil at the correct intervals. Diesels do tend to soot up the oil but the diesel specific oils have additional detergents included to allow for this, so it isn't a problem.

Incidentaly, the highest spec long drain diesel truck oils from Shell are mineral oils and not synthetic.

Thanks all.
I never knew there was as purpose made engine flush.
He has put in a cheap oil in while waiting for your replies so i will pass on your info.

It seems to me that some of you are suggesting it is a good idea to flush whether or not it appears to be needed. Is that so?
I have never done it but will in future under your advice.

Thanks again

Lets put it this way, the cleaner the engine and the oil,the more miles you will get out of it, other than that it is a nice feeling to know how clean it is.

oops

hi MFers. (Mercedes Forumers before you get the wrong idea.)

Just changed friends cheapo oil for the intended oil and performed the flush.

A couple of heart stopping moments though.

We put the diesel flush in and ran the engine. The engine didn't sound too clever after a few seconds and within a minute we lost our bottle and went to switch off the engine. Before either of us could get to the keys the engine cut out. Rather than risk trying to start it again with the diesel in we drained the diesel and put in the oil. After a fair few tries and a brief panicky moment the engine started again and seems to be running fine.

We are guessing that maybe the computer won't allow the engine to run with below a certain amount of fluid in the engine. What do you think? With this in mind would it be better to not flush or is it simply that we did not put enough diesel in?

I am not too sure i would like to risk flushing my van when it comes to it.:???:

Sorry I've re-read my earlier post and it may be a bit misleading.

I ADD some diesel to the oil and run the engine for a few minutes, i don't run it with diesel only in the sump. I'm tempted to agree with earlier posts that I'd be too scared to do that. If it would be too overfull for this then let some of the old oil out first.

What oil do I need to get for my 313 Sprinter, what quantity and what are the recommended service intervals please.

I've done 600 miles in my sprinter now, averaged 34.5 mpg and love it to death. Way, way better than the Transits I've had in the past, just got to get aircon installed and my mission is complete!

Additions so far:-
Blaupunkt Woodstock DAB radio
Removed the naff speakers from the dash and installed Blaupunkt speakers (dramatic improvement)
Added Active sub above the cab
Split charge & Leisure battery (under drivers seat)
Reversing Camera (Dead esay to park withing an inch of the back step :p )

Regards - J
