You will need:

Dipstick,

Box filter

Sump gasket

ATF (I only use MB fluid)

Best to get all from dealer as the quality is good.

Thanks for the reply

Any particular way to drain the oil i.e can you get all the oil out of the cooler and converter or just out the sump pan?
Is there a filling hole on the box and what quantity of oil would I need (think I have about 8L in the garage)

In depends on the model.
Some have a spearate plug whilst others do not..
if you look at the underside of the car you can tell.

Your car willnot have a separate drain bung for the TC.

The best way to remove all the oil is to drain it from the sump then undo one of the transmission cooler pipes and run the engine until 3l is pumped out.

Smart + others :)
I'd also replace the gearbox connector plug while your there, for the wiring connection. Just a stitch in time job.

I thought 99 was changeover year from TC Drain -> no TC Drain, so if it's and early car there's a chance (isn't there?)

I had a problem with the sump pan bolts, and it's quite common, one of the screws had seized in to the aluminium sump clamp, consequently the head snapped off leaving clamp and screw in box, so if i did another i would purchase new bolts and clamps (one is different and seems more prone to seizing) when re-fitting i used some low strength loctite on the threads and some copperslip on the part of the bolt that passes through the clamp (no doubt this will benefit the next owner more than me)

BlackC55, shoud the ATF be replaced on a mileage or age basis? The reason I ask is that the wifes SLK is just 8 years old with 33K miles on the clock. We got the car when it was 18 months old and it's still running the original ATF. The gear changes are fine although with this cold weather they do feel a bit sluggish first thing in the morning but are OK when everything warms up.
