Todays London Evening Standard runs a front page story (plus a further 2 pages inside) on a Police raid that has stopped a multi-million pound racket on stolen Mercedes that are stripped and shipped as parts to Africa.

Quotes.... "They targeted E Class Mercedes made before 1996 because they were not equiped with the latest security alarms....."

...."It is believed 120 Mercedes cars a month in London were stolen to order and delivered to the yard (in Stratford East London)...."

".....The Mercedes Benz is believed to have taken over from the Peugeot 505 as the so-called 'African Taxi' after the Peugeots were discontinued".....

"... The cars were stolen with a low-loader by a gang specialising in taking prestige vehicles, often from under the owners' noses. Within hours of the vehicle being taken from outside a home, there would be no evidence it ever existed....."

Police photos show a Silver E class saloon being driven into the yard and then being stripped to its shell in 180 minutes!

Certainly makes you think!

Anyone else seen this story?

There was a gang they caught doing the same thing about a year ago. Once one gets caught, I'm sure another one will start up.
I'm quite glad my 124 estate is off a public road at night now.

When I saw the cars on their sides being striped and crowbarring out the engine I felt sad, I know that they are only machines and tin boxes, such is life
