hi all,
just a small point-i had new jurid pads fitted(oems i believe) a month ago and now just before my 260e comes to a halt, there is a grating sound from the offside front wheel accompanied by loud squealing(none of the other wheels squeal) Finally within the last few metres of stopping the abs activates.
Occasionally( when wet usually) the squealing /grating / abs situation does'nt happen.
Any ideas?-did'nt happen before on the old pads(previous owner fitted em')

thanks in anticipation

I can answer the squeal problem.

i fitted new pads to my 190 shortly after getting it, as the pad warning light used to flicker on braking and it was irritating me!

Anyway when i removed the old pads (which were genuine MB pads) there was a thin metal 'bracket' clamped to the back of the pads, with the Merc symbol stamped on it. Written above and below the symbol was "Anti Squeal"!! bit of a giveaway really!

the new pads (pattern part im afraid) didnt have the anti squeal thing on them, hence now at low speed braking they squeal. Pants really but something i have learned to live with.

As for the grinding, it sounds like your pads are down to the metal already....you havent been rallying have you???!!!

Whip the offending wheel of and have a nose around. Make sure everything is in the right place and done up tight.

my mechanic had a good blast around with compressed air, which did'nt change anything.Could a stone be wedged in somewhere that air would'nt force out.In the haynes manual it says that a stone trapped behind the back plate(?) would cause a grating sound like this.

if this was the case, in my view (which isnt always right!!) the only time you would get a grating noise is if the stone was rubbing against a moving part....i.e a stone or some grit was caught between the pad and the disc...if so, then your disc would be badly scored.....take the wheel off and have a look.
