Needed two new tyres for my ML430, at 275/55/17 they weren't going to be cheap, especially as I need an element of off-road ability and don't cut corners on the one thing that keeps my car on the road.

The OEM Dunlops seemed the way to go, rang round suppliers (especially with some in 'Januray Sale "1000s of tyre prices slashed" mode'). National wanted £160 per tyre  Merc dealer wanted £185 per tyre  (PLUS FITTING & VAT  ) Kwik Fit wanted £230 per tyre

Then rang an old contact who I used to get tyres from years ago. Same tyre, £100.54 per tyre fulling inclusive. That means either Merc and Kwik Fits buying team are crap, or (more likely) they are trying to make over 100% mark-up

Moral? don't trust main dealers/stealers or national tyre co.s :?

I can second this, only with exhausts rather than tyres. Having just bought another car (sadly not a merc) the front section of the exhaust was blowing quite badly, hence new shiny one needed.

All of the major players Kwik Fit etc were quoting almost £100 inc VAT for the part. Convinced i could get 2 almost straight metal pipes cheaper than this i rang around a few smaller places. Now if anybody knows a place called Wickford in Essex, they will know the High Street. For about 25 years there has been a small independent garage called Quick Fix there. For some stupid and unknown reason Kwik Fit decided to build one of their stealerships right next door to it...the buildings join infact!!!

Being a hater of stealerships i decided to get a quote from the independent. It turns out (and i had this confirmed from some of the larger places) the actual part costs £43 inc VAT. Quick Fix supplied and fitted for £45. The higher prices were for the much hated labour.

Now with a guarantee as long as your arm, i think that was £45 well spent!

You'll have trouble beating Micheldever (at Micheldever, Hants).

They are reasonably competant, speedy and very cheap!

I've used these people just recently and know of others..no issues. Picked up the complete set for my car delivered inc VAT for £423.00. Local tyre fitter put em on for £8 each inclusive. These were 225/45/17 Dunlop SP9000 fronts and 245/40/17 rears. Good deal!

I agree about Micheldever, I've been using them for 25 years, most recently 4 Goodyear Eagle F1 in 205/60/VR15 for my 300CE. £251 fitted with stick on weights on the inside.
