Hello all, I have the opportunity to purchase the attached car, it's a 280cew with leather, FSH and waxoyled. I've read of horrendous mpg which I can live with but otherwise they seem reliable?

I would welcome any opinions and if anyone knows of the car, again any advice is welcome.

Many thanks

Welcome to the forum, that car is one of the most desirable MB and that looks to be a good sample

Lovely car. Looks great in that colour combination.

Just think, for the same money you could be driving around in a lovely 52 plate Halfords special 1.0 Corsa with drainpipe exhausts and one note bass bins.

The 123 series are known for their long-life. Excessive play in steering box can be expensive if it's beyond adjustment. The 280 (110) engine is durable but suffers from oil leaks which can be expensive + misfires & yes, it is dreadfull on fuel. I used to be a "road tester" for MB & drove one for a week. That was followed by a week in a V12. Didn't notice much difference in fuel comsumption between the two:shock:

I'm sold on the whole "it's same price as a Corsa arguement", every one of my cars has been a 'classic', only a mug would would pile £Ks into a car which is worth 2/3 the price a year later :).

Type49 - When you say that you didn't notice much difference in mpg between a V12 and this, what mpg were you getting?????

Thanks!

I think the best I ever got from our 123 280E was around 20mpg. Early-mid teens for stop-start I'd expect. Best not to think about it!
Great cars though with plenty of oomph. Steering box on ours was adjusted but I know some can't be.

Its a heavy car with 1970s suspension and no ABS. Stopping ours in a hurry on a wet road could be quite 'entertaining'.

I would fully expect that the price you are paying now for a car like that has bottomed out. Given a careful owner and bit of TLC the only way for its value to go is up. Probably will never attain the levels that pagodas reach, but could certainly sell for £10k upwards in 5 years time or so.

Now you're asking, we're probably talking of 10 years ago! All I remember is the same driving to work & back in both cars used about the same amount of fuel. I would guess at about 16mpg:(

Such a lot of car for the money, and a great colour combination. You know the pitfalls now, so please put us out of our misery......buy it.

A guy called Mark Cosovich in Swansea is reputed to be the UK expert on these cars and knows a lot of the cars personally because he is a specialist refurbisher and model register captain for the official Mercedes-Benz club.

His number is 01792 846888.

That car is absolutely beautiful, my dad had a 4 door W123 230E in metallic dark green when I was a kid. He loved it. I remember him doing 120mph effortlessley once on the motorway. :)
