Hi all i wonder if yuo can help, i have a 1995 c200 elegance Black and what i want to do is de-chrome the grill making it completely black and removing the front star and replacing it with a badge flat on the bonnet. Any advice on how i would go about it, or anyone that does de-chroming

De-chroming & re-badging

Hi thegoonerman

In essence what you want to do is to paint the existing grill black. Another member might be able to advise on whether an aftermarket replacement black grill exists for your model but this option sounds like the more expensive option.

The badge (3-pointed star?) you want to place on the bonnet would be in approximately the same place where BMW place their emblem?

Have you found a source of panel-mounted badges or will you be adapting one of the vertical mounting variety?

REGARDS Phil

iirc the coupe ones are the same size - try looking at a SLK / CLK / CL badge.

try getting a 'low spec' grille and pulling off the crome trim? (elegance / avantgarde are chromed up, the sport / classic are less chromey)

The old SLK (R170) had the badge on so MB dealer should be able to supply it.

The new R171 dont have one.

not sure what the arrangement on your bonnet will be.

Boring tho this is. the Ferrari F1 team use small Merc trucks for the engine team. they sprayed the grill Red including the 3 pointed star. looks a bit tacky to be honest.

dechroming and badge

Thanks guys

No phil i haven't sourced anything yet was thinking either an enamel badge or the same 3 point star that is place on the boot. was also thinking of a grill with the 3 point star in the middle i think like the 300 series. but dont know yet if i can get one for the W202.
