I have ordered the following grille for my W126.

I was thinking of maybe spraying the rear of the grille a matte black, as i think the grey looks abot boring.

Either that, or maybe replacing the rear with a mesh like the following.

I think that they look best in black, you can take the chrome trim off.

Do use a plastic base/ ptimer coat first, then the Matt black, I am fitting a black one on my SL

I actually wanted to keep the chrome trim on Tel, but just spray the rear of the plastic grille attachment black.

Just done mine on my 202 C230k in black looks much better than the grey, took all of half an hour to do ;)
P.S. Don't go the mesh route it looks awful in my opinion

Never one to turn down a request here's a photo, sorry about the rain effect, I think your grille is the avantgarde type with more horizontal chrome strips ;)

kind of makes it look like a volvo somehow.
Good point lol.

I actually had keeping the chrome strips on, and keeping the black mesh behind them.

Although i think i will just stick to the original idea.

I wonder what other wonderful or grusome mods people have made to their Mercedes grille's.

Stumbled onto this thread last night, its spurred me on to have a go myself, a can of primer, a can of matt black, an hours work and heres the result!
Its made a big difference to the front of the car, really tidied it up.

Guys

Question.

Did you take the plastic honeycombe out to spray it, or do you just take the chrome strips off and spray it in situ having masked the grill surround and bonnet.

I took mine out it's really easy and once it's out the chrome trim strips just slide off so no masking is necessary ;)

It really is a quick job to remove the grille and slide off the crome strips, I reckon it would take longer to mask off than to remove, you also get the chance to give the grille insert a good clean before spraying. While you are waiting for the primer to dry you can give the chrome strips a polish up, I used brasso wadding but T-Cut would work too. I am really pleased with the result, it looks much better black than the standard dull grey colour.

Looks quality that. Much better and as you say looks more tidy then the dull grey.

Glad this has inspired people to make their grilles a change for the better! lol:D

Hey OZ420SE, Seen your car on the Benzworld USA forum - Nice!
Like the front corners so much that I just ordered a pair today!
I notice you dont have side markers, it must be a UK thing cos the yanks dont have them either. It's another £20 to get clear ones! got to do it though!
Painted my grill as soon as I got it - did it a few years ago to my W123 -looks so much better.
