I own a 1989 300se auto which has just started to groan when i turn the steering wheel. The fluid has been topped up but it's still making the noise.....does anyone have any ideas as to what this may be? The car still drives fine but the noise just won't go away.

Thanks!!

Groaning steering.

Try bleeding the power steering system. Jack up the front and with engine off, fill the reservoir to about a half-inch from the top. Turn the steering full lock to lock several times, topping up if necessary. Then have someone else start the engine while you keep an eye on the reservoir and be ready to further top up as the level may drop quickly. Finally, off the jack and with the engine idling, turn the steering about a quarter turn in each direction several times. Switch off, allow to cool again and do a final top up to the max mark. This procedure should clear any air from the system.
Bear in mind worn/dry suspension balljoints can also be responsible for noisy steering.
Cheers, Tom.

Where does the noise come from? Is it worse when you're going slow or stationary?

If it's worse when slow and the noise is from the n/s, then it'll be the steering idler. My w123 was quite noisy there.

You can get the idler kit for about 12-15 quid. That comes with new bushes, inserts, spacers, washers and pivot bolt. Changed mine and put plenty of grease on the pivot bolt. No more noise! (from there anyway ;) )
