I'm not really into customising - ( there isn't a customising 'scene' round here in the grim north like there is further south- we tend to spend time and effort in putting roll-cages into our wives cars and take them into the forests instead.)

But I gotta admit those C-classes at the GTG pics look nice - Where do you get them there fancy  grilles from?  How many of my whippets will I have to sell to get one?

What's going in its place Koolvin? Surely not a standard grille.

On the question of customising grilles can the standard ones be spray painted? I'm wondering how my car would look with the standard grey grille painted the same colour as the bodywork.

The avantgarde style grill on my car is an accessory bought from the stealership. Ask them for part number: B66880127.  It will be listed as "radiator grill sh*ll
" for no particular model, but don't let that worry you it's the avantgarde grill, they just don't know it is :) .  It's actually a cut-to-size pre-facelift w210 grill, with an e-class part number on the back, but this package comes with screws and a 10-step instruction set on how to install it.  For a really highly detailed explanation of the package and how to install it see here:

W202 Avantgarde Grill Insert

...courtesy of a colleague of mine from benzsport.com who bought the said grill from his local stealership in the USA, he fitted it to a C43 ///AMG so it's a fractionally different installation procedure because it has an air intake unlike every other w202 intake.

The part is £168 including VAT.

According to Steve (MBenz) the grill that Koolvin has is an S-class grill cut-to-size, rather than an e-class one, it was bought from Lorinser and is slightly more expensive than the one you can get from your stealership.  The only differences are that Koolvin's grill is a slightly lighter shade than the stealership one (mine is totally black, koolvins is slightly grey and more like the stock grill colour) and koolvin's hasn't got the moulded intake guard (like the stock one has - must be on the same place as the e-class).  Otherwise the grill is basically the same as the stealership one and looks 10x better than the stock one, it's a real head-turner among other MB owners (no-one else notices it!).

It was my first mod and it took me 10 mins to fit - there is no excuse for anyone with a w202 to NOT have changed their grill now!  Stockers be shamed!

Yes the standard one can be painted, but it's  not worth the time and effort to remove all the chrome strips sand, coat, paint and laquer - price comes to more than a S class type grill.

A friend of mine had it done before he saw my grill looked nice - but looks even nicer now he has swaped it! his grill changing/paintings cost him over 500 pounds!

Believe it or not, most of the best aftermarket parts for your benz can come straight from MB themselves.  My grill, AMG styling pack, exhaust, and chrome shiftgate all came from one stealership or another, or from MB specialists.
My door mirrors with the indicators in them came from EuroCarParts, my wheels came from TyreSave.

whoops, it's actually just the shiftgate frame!

Full details here: Fitted '00 SLK's chrome shift gate surround on '98 C280... $12.50 mod in 60 seconds...  Just call into your stealership, give them the part number "170 267 0288" and cough up £5.04   They might tell you it won't fit but ignore them.  It takes about 2 or 3 mins to fit, you have to push down the surrounding panel and then prise the edges of the old plastic frame (which has no part number on it!) up, it clicks when it comes out because it has tiny little ridges on it to keep it in.  Once off, throw it into your "old mercedes parts museum" (you will have one of them soon  ) and click the new one in like the old one.

They're not blanking plates!  One of them is a childlock switch for the rear windows, the other is a little "airbag" light which comes on for about 3 seconds when I turn the key in the ignition, just to tell me it's checked the airbags and they're working.  If it stays on permanently then you know you've got problems, prolly the last thing you see as your head is caved in by the steering wheel...

June 1998   Must have been a good month.

If it's any consolation mine was bought as fleet and it came with Charcoal leather, 5 speed electronic auto, high capacity battery & alternator, climate control, 5 MB sport alloy wheels and a few other bits and pieces.  Some of those options came "as standard"...

The twin oval exhaust in w202 fitment is only available for the ///AMG c43.  It's £489 +VAT from the stealership (I got a discount so it only came to about £480 inclusive), but the MB garage won't fit it, because you need to modify your current pipework and if it's not stock they won't do it for warranty or liability reasons (their value is based on a reliable image etc).  Once you've bought it you'll need a custom sleeve making for you, and then any old garage can cut your stock pipe and rear section off, weld the sleeve on and clamp it all together like any other replacement exhaust backbox.

There are certain intangible rewards from buying genuine MB equipment from the stealership.  Like their servicing ad. campaign states: "she's worth it".

Shude/Fuzzer,

Mine was reg'd in March 1998 and I have the the rear window child-lock switch (left of pic) but, as I mentioned to Shude (Nick) at the GTG, I don't have the air-bag light by the right window switches. My air-bag fault light is part of the dash lights/layout. Shude, does that mean you have light by switches and in the dash for the air-bag?

Also, out of interest, how can one tell the difference between the high capacity battery and the standard one?

S.

Hi steve , the small light is for when the mercedes child seat is fitted  , i had one in my newer a class , its totally useless unless you have kids and a mb child seat.

The high capacity battery is most likely on your car , it does not appear on a car without a/c unless its a diesel. The high capacity battery is also paired with a larger alternator for the a/c . In your boot , look as the small clamp on the bottom of the battery , you will find yours is on the end slot and there are other slots for the smaller ones. It was avalible as an option at one point without the a/c .

I have ordered the chrome surround , it will be here on wednesdsay  :)
