T212 facelift, 2013. A few toys including pan roof, 19" rims, Harmon Kardon, nappa, privacy glass.
Halfords are currently doing a 2 for 1 deal on the below spec'd oil where you get 10litres for £32.99. Whilst this appears a good deal can anyone tell me whether this could be used in a 2001 E320 CDi or is it false economy ?

"Halfords 5W/40 Synthetic Diesel Oil 5L is formulated to the same protection and performance standards as the leading brands. Suitable for VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda diesel cars fitted with the ''Pumpe Duce'' PD engines requiring VW 505.01 specification oil. Also meets the requirements of VW505.00/VW500.00, Ford WS5 M2C917.A, MB229.1. "

Thx

You best bet is to go for MB 229.3 or 229.5 spec oils.

229.1 is good enough but not ideal.

All I can say is that I've been using it on all my cars for 12 years or more with no problems at all. It seems to be highly detergent, which is a good thing generaly, but it does get black quickly because it's cleaning the crap out of the engine that the mineral oils left behind. Ther apearance shouldn't be a indicator of the oil's ability to lubricate.

Mobil 1 will do the same thing, but I haven't been able to afford that stuff for years !

I only do a few thousand miles a year, so I only change the oil and filter once a year. I've had no problems with this philosophy, even when I was doing 15000 miles a year in Heathrow teaffic.

Most enthusiasts change their oil too frequently, I guess it's what the psycologists call "appeasement" for all that thrashing thay give the engines !

BMW 520d SE F10, formerly c220cdi estate (for 12.5 years and 345k miles), before that w124 and w210
It is worth noting that Halfords Fully Synthetic Oil (not specifically for diesel engines) states that it is suitable for modern turbo diesels, and meets the MB229.3 requirements. If it is also on offer, I would go for it. I have been using it for years in a C220cdi with no problems (yet!).

I too have used the Halfords synthetic for some time on my 2002 C220 CDI without problems - although I wouldn't expect any problems to show up for at least 200,000 miles anyway, with regular changes (I get about 18,000 miles between changes according to the service indicator). However, the service indicator cannot tell whether my oil is synthetic or otherwise, and I strongly suspect it cannot tell what the condition of the oil is either.

Get yourself a Trade discount card, and save even more! You don't HAVE to be in the trade to get one BTW.

I'm not, and I have one...... I've saved ££££'s.

Where do you get the discount card from, or are you just talking Halfords?

Just Halfords. Walk up to the parts or Trade counter in your best oily Screwfix overalls. Ask for a trade card application form. Fill it in, sign the card, and save £££'s.

If anyone is interested, this is also on a 2 for 1 offer at £31.99 for 2 x 5litres.
