May be a silly question but, have been told that when my 124 was made, some high spec models were being supplied with pollen filters.

So, if I have a pollen filter, where should I look to find it please on E280 124 1st reg 2/1994.

Am experiencing problems with blower working when it wants to, & have been told that if a pollen filter is fitted & bunged/clogged up, this could be causing blower to shut down.

Regards,
Keith.

If the car has aircon it it will probably have a dust/pollen filter. My 124 didn't so I'm afraid there was no fine filtration.

Interesting. My 500E is about as high spec'd as the W124 came - it only lacks climate control but has A/C and I wasn't aware of any dust/pollen filter, can anyone else advise?

Hi,

My 94 E300D with AC had a pollen filter fitted. I noticed when I got the car that the output of the heater was a lot less than that of the 300TE I had previously. Looking at previous postings I wasn't sure whether I'd have one or not.
Investigation showed that I did, although it wasn't obvious without taking things apart.
Its above the "heater fan inlet". It is in 2 halves, which are joined with plastic lugs (part of the filter assembly) and sits on top of the "heater fan inlet". The reason it is in 2 halves is that you have to insert each half into position and them join them together. They don't sit flat , one being angled with relation to the other, to fit onto the outside of the "heater fan inlet". To get at it I had to remove all of the black plastic cowling surrounding the "heater fan inlet" (under the windscreen wiper). This wasn't as easy as it sounds as the cowling is held in place by Philips steel screws which go into brass inserts in the plastic ( water runs into this cowling from the windscreen) so they had corroded quite well.
The date stamp on the filter was 01/94, so I assumed it hadn't been changed at all. It was basically black and solid with muck. A quick trip to the stealership followed: part number MA124 830 01 18, about £20.
It now works fine.

Hope this helps you out.

Thanks to all for info, & in particular Andy C, could be just the answer I'm looking for.

Can the filter be spotted to confirm its existance without removal of the wiper motor beforehand?

Regards, Keith.

Thanks Andy,
You've prompted me to check mine. heater works fine. But if there is one then it's at least 130K mls old (last German service) and ought to be replaced.

Hi,

I've just had a look to see if you can see the filter without removing anything. You can. ( Although it may be easier for me as I know what to look for !)
Armed with a torch, open the bonnet, stand at the front passenger side wing and look in the " heater inlet cover" on the right. On mine there are 3 "grilles", one on the drivers side (metal), one in the middle (plastic) and one on the passemger side (metal). Looking through the grill on the passenger side toward the centre of the car (or the grill in the middle) it is possible to see the top of the filter. You can see the edge of the "heater inlet" and the filter sits on top.

Pinball, my description of access wasn't too good. You don't need to remove the wiper motor, just the plastic covers that surround it.

Hope this helps,
