Hi, my second post as a newbie. :)

The battery on my R170 completely lost its charge (luckily was in a safe spot) and so it had to be boosted, and all is well. Naturally the radio has to be recoded. The dealer who sold the car to me refuses to give me the code (that’s a whole other story).

So - can an MB dealer pull out the head unit to obtain the code? It’s not critical because I”m thinking of replacing it anyway with an Alpine head unit with Bluetooth, etc., and I presume those come with their own codes as well.

Thank you for listening, and any advice you have. :)

I’d check the owners handbook, usually in there somewhere

Unfortunately I have a code but they had to replace the h/u before I bought it because the original one was DOA, so this one has a new code.

Hi from a fellow R170 owner.
I've heard of head units having the code on one of the stickers on the top, side or back of the unit and visible once the unit has been released from the dash. Useful in this situation but not good from a security point of view. Might be worth releasing the unit to check.

Thank you! I have to take the car back to dealer probably to have new battery installed and dome light replaced, so I’ll ask them to check on this too, although, I have already bought an Aopine h/u with bluetooth, etc. to replace it with, so it may be more trouble than it’s worth. However, I don’t know. Thanks again.

When you get it out, copy the serial number from the sticker.
Go online and you will find some sites that charge £10 to give you the code.

Thank you, that’s good to know. In the meantime, I learned that the sticker should have the code on it. However since it’s an old unit and has no bluetooth and the CD doesn’t work, I’m just having it replaced with an Alpine CD/BT. I thought about buying a used one from a guy in Germany eBay but in the end, why replace a 20 year old radio with the same thing. In any event, thank you for your help, much appreciated.

I”m all set, I found the code on a slip of paper in with the owner’s manuals and papers in the glove box, and it works perfectly. But I have an appointment for Thursday to have the Alpine installed anyway.

I had a similar issue on my old E430. At that time the Dealer was able retrieve the code from MB records and this wasn't the original supplying dealer either.
So worth a shot in asking.
