Due to the success in MB owners helping me with my last issue, I have another question.

I wish now I had taken the Xenon headlight option when I bought my 2003 C220 SE. Has anyone changed their headlight bulbs for anything more powerfull and are they any good?

I have a 2001 C220, and was wondering the same thing! I found this site via ebay:

http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Autobulbs-Direct-and-Ghost-Styling

I can't remember exactly how much I was quoted, but I think it was something ridiculous like £15.00 to buy the brighter bulbs, which are not xenon, but allegedley give the same effect. If I remember correctly there were three diffrent types. Ice blue,(which were for off road only), brilliant white and white. The latter two were legal, and according to the guy I spoke to, the brilliant white ones gave the same effect as xenon. I priced the same bulbs in Halfords, and they were £45.00 a set, so it's cheap in comparison.
My understanding of it all, is that it's not just a case of replacing the bulbs. To do the job you have to replace the lenses, unit and bulbs, as xenon bulbs are no good without the correct holders and lenses. The cheaper alternative is the 'copycat' bulbs, which according to what I'm told, gives roughly the same effect.
I've never actually got round to doing it, but your post has jogged my memory.
I'd be interested to know how you get on.

Ive put off road bulbs in my e-class and it sailed through an mot as they never remove the bulbs and check them they were only around 7.00 from halfrauds and have a higher wattage than the standard. some people claim they can melt your lenses however mine have been in over a year and get regular use

Great! That's exactly what I'm gonna do. thanks for that.

Help! I've just bought a set of those 'brilliant white' bulbs, got under the bonnet to change the bulbs and it doesn't look like it's going to be easy, can anyone explain what I need to do?! I've removed the screw-cap covers but it would appear as though the bulbs are then screwed down? Surely I don't have to get a tool behind what little room there is, to un-screw and replace the replace bulbs??

P.S. What are the bulbs like?

Thanks,
DD

After deciding that surely Mercedes wouldn't design their headlights so awkwardly I had another attempt today and changed all the bulbs in less than 15 minutes! Not sure what I was looking at the other day when I first attempted to change them but all's well now.

Thanks!

That will be because the Hellfords ones are actually less bright than the 60W PIAAs. The Hellfords one draw more power and give less light! but for £7 what do you expect.

We talk about lights at this time every year. I'm using the 80W/80W PIAAs (not cheap) but miles better than anything else I have tried.

The wiring is capable of 100W bulbs, any more and wires will melt. It's 1mm copper wire.
