Have recently purchased a 1999 SLK, every time I use the headlight washers the nearside washer empties approx 1/2 of the washer bottle.
Any ideas?

IS the front of the car wetter on one side than the other, have some one use the headlamp wash whilst you watch it happen, also look for water coming from under the, could be the nozzel or the pipe running to the washer.

It only appears from the near side after I have operated the washers, the near side washer sprays more water than the offside.

The pipe has come lose or the jet has lost its head

The pipe is connected, it appears to be leaking from the washer unit. I will check the head to see if it loose when it pokes out off the bumper. Thanks.

That is of great help, will check for a split.
Also noticed that the reservoir cap (part 20) is leaking when it is filled to the top, should this be a water tight seal as the water runs into the inside front wing?

I cant see any special seal for it, so it could leak if over filled

I thought that I might seal it with silicon sealant.

why?
Its a loose fit for good reason. overfilling or freezing up for example. It aint broke so don't fix it. In any case, in my experience, silicon sealant often causes more problems than it solves. If it gets into the system you're in for endless blocked pumps, pipes and jets. Its fine so best leave it alone.
