Headlights

I believe it's possible to switch head lights from "right hand drive mode" to "left hand mode" without swapping head lights (great expense) is this correct, or did I dream this? If this is possible what year did the system come into use. My need to know is that I want to buy a new, to me, second hand car, and as I spend a lot of time abroad this ability would be usefull. Malcolm, Sorry for the delay but I've been a bit busy (exhaust broke) and we are getting ready to come back to blighty for Xmas. It's a 1999 220CDI estate, which I know is not adaptable with out major surgery. What I would like to know is when or what year did lefthand/righthand adaptable lights become "on line", and what models. I'm afraid that being a pensioner I'm not in the upper end of the Mercedes buying bracket, Mr Brown won't let me be, but I believe some lights are switchable from under the bonnet. Xenon lights are switchable, the bulb variety are not.
